Youth - Danny Apajee

OXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution’s Under-18, Under-16 and Under-14 sides were all in action last weekend, posting a 2-1-0 combined record. The U18s and U16s topped Empire Revolution 2-1 and 5-1, respectively, on Sunday, June 8, at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. The U14s saw their 18-game undefeated streak snapped with a 2-1 loss against New York Soccer Club on Saturday, June 7, at School of Holy Child in Rye, N.Y.

UNDER-18s

The Under-18s closed out the regular season with their fourth consecutive win, topping Empire Revolution, 2-1. Empire took the lead against the run of play in the 14th minute through Matt Vuylsteke, but the Revs responded before halftime. Amadu Kanuteh (Lynn, Mass.) levelled the score after Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass.) volleyed Adam Norman’s (Natick, Mass.) cross on-frame but the Empire goalkeeper diverted the ball into the path of Kanuteh to score. Two minutes later, the Revs were ahead as Gio Alves (Pawtucket, R.I.) slipped the ball through for Kanuteh to chase, and he fired hard and low past the ‘keeper. The win extended the U18s’ unbeaten streak to 11 games (10-0-1) in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy where they concluded their regular-season schedule with a 14-5-3 (45 pts.) record. The result brings the U18s up to second place with 2.05 points per game and they have automatically qualified for the playoffs.

UNDER-16s

The Under-16s posted a 5-1 win against Empire Revolution on Sunday, as they closed their regular-season schedule with a five-game (3-0-2) unbeaten streak. The U16s took the lead after 19 minutes as Aaron James (Amherst, Mass.) crossed from the right and Derek Blanchette (Scituate, R.I.) was on hand to finish. James got a goal of his own two minutes later, as he picked up a pass from Daniel Jones (West Hartford, Conn.) and placed his finish past the goalkeeper. Empire pulled a goal back in the 41st minute through Tanner Jamison, but the Revs regained the two-goal lead in the 62nd minute as Justin Rennicks (South Hamilton, Mass.) picked up Justin Freitas’ (North Attleboro, Mass.) through ball to score. Rennicks then turned provider three minutes later, as he played through Brandon Girard (Beverly, Mass.) who slotted home. Freitas capped the scoring in the 68th minute, as another through ball from Rennicks penetrated the Empire defense, and Freitas was able to round the ‘keeper to score. The win extended the U16s’ unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2) in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy where they end the season in sixth with a 9-9-5 (32 pts.) record and 1.39 points per game.

UNDER-14s

The Under-14s slipped to their first defeat since Oct. 6, 2013, as they fell, 2-1, to New York Soccer Club on Saturday. NYSC took the lead after 15 minutes through Jack Beer and the score remained the same through halftime. The U14s came out strong in the second half, equalizing in the 42nd minute as Alex Clarke (Windsor, Conn.) received Andrew Talcott’s (Westwood, Mass.) pass before holding off a defender and firing into the lower right corner. The Revs pushed hard for a winning goal in the second half, but were caught out in the final minute of play as Jack Beer grabbed his second goal of the game to inflict a first loss in 18 games for the Revs. The U14s is now 14-3-5 for the season.

The Under-18s and the Under-16s have now concluded their regular-season schedules. The Under-18s have qualified for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs and will face the Houston Dynamo, Chivas USA, and Capital Area RailHawks Academy, June 23-27. The Under-16s will next participate in the USSFDA Showcase. Both events will be held at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Indiana.

The Under-14s will also travel to Westfield, Indiana, for three games at Grand Park Sports Campus. The U14s will face De Anza Force on Friday, June 13, before playing Real So Cal on Saturday, June 14, and concluding the trip against the Philadelphia Union on Monday, June 16.
