After guiding the New England Revolution through a successful four-game road stretch, Marko Mitrović has been named head coach on the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi. The recognition comes after the Revs earned nine points during that stretch and moved into third place in the Eastern Conference, capped by Sunday night’s 2-1 win over Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field.
It was an important three points for the Revolution, who have been battling it out with the Fire in the standings for months. It was also just the 10th win for the Revolution as visitors in Chicago through their 28-year history together.
“This was our fourth game in a row on the road. We really had a very challenging and difficult game week. I mean, every team has the same circumstances and same challenges in this league, but going to Columbus, going to LA, going to New York, and going to Chicago, there was big fatigue presented with the players. I’m just impressed with the way they recovered, the way they pushed, and their mentality,” Mitrović explained following the match. “The way we faced those challenges and the way we embraced all the adversities that we had, I’m really grateful for this group.”
Mitrović and his squad handed Chicago their first loss since July, defended strongly against Robert Lewandowski and the Fire attack, and improved their road form to 4-1-0 on their last five away trips. The win also brought the Revolution to a total of 13 wins in 25 games, furthering Mitrović’s impact in his first season at the helm. Mitrović has now earned the most points and wins in the first 25 games of any head coach in club history.
“I think everyone gives 100 percent until the end. That’s Marko’s message to all of us, you have to sacrifice until the final whistle. Never be satisfied with the situation until it’s over, and then we go again,” said midfielder Jackson Yueill, following his two-assist performance on Sunday.
Yueill helped initiate the scoring for the Revolution in Chicago, setting up Dor Turgeman’s 39th minute goal to put the Revs in front. He later earned a secondary assist on the eventual match winner, once again finding Turgeman, who sent a ball across the box for Peyton Miller to finish. Turgeman’s goal-and-assist performance also earned him a spot on the bench for the week’s Best XI.
The honor marked Mitrović’s second time on the MLS Team of the Matchday this season as the team prepares for their return to Gillette Stadium for the first time since August 23. At home, Mitrović has helped the team earn 26 of their 43 points. Kickoff against Orlando City SC is set for 7:30 p.m. ET in Foxborough on Saturday night.
