MLS IS BACK TOURNAMENT

After a four-month hiatus from league play, the MLS is Back Tournament kicks off this week in Orlando. Each team will play three group-stage matches that will count towards the regular-season standings, and sides that advance to the knockout stage will vie to be crowned champions, earning a berth to the 2021 Concacaf Champions League.

Not to mention, the players will also be contesting for a piece of a $1.1 million pool of prize money based on results.

The stage has been set for the initial matchups, and the New England Revolution have been placed in Group C with three Eastern Conference foes: Toronto FC, D.C. United and the Montreal Impact. The top two finishers in Group C will advance to the tournament’s Round of 16, while several third-place finishers league-wide will also book a place in the knockout rounds.

Following the Round of 16, the winners will advance to the quarterfinals and compete for an opportunity to vie for the title in the semifinals and final.

RECENT FORM VS. MONTREAL IMPACT

After four long months without soccer following the MLS suspension due to COVID-19, the New England Revolution will make their return to the pitch in the MLS is Back Tournament on Thursday. Similar to how the team started out the original 2020 campaign, New England will open the MLS is Back Tournament group stage against the Montreal Impact.

When the Revs and Impact squared off in February to open the season, New England ultimately fell 2-1 at Olympic Stadium. Teal Bunbury’s early goal gave the Revs the initial lead in the game, however Montreal responded with a pair of goals to give the Canadian side the upper hand. Tajon Buchanan almost notched a late equalizer, but it cannoned off the post.

However, that initial match lights extra fuel to the fire as the Revs have their sights set on redemption and three points in their rematch in Orlando.

The Revs went winless against the Impact in 2019 - losing at home and drawing on the road - but New England have won six of their past 10 meetings with Montreal (6-3-1) dating back to 2016.

The Revs will look to start the group stage off on the right foot with a win over the Impact on Thursday.

Overall Record vs. Impact: 9-10-3

Last Meeting at Gillette Stadium: Impact 3, Revs 0 (April 24, 2019)
Last Meeting at Olympic Stadium: Impact 2, Revs 1 (February 29, 2020)

Thursday night will mark the return of "The Original," New England's brand new primary kit designed as a nod to the club's original 1996 look, as Major League Soccer and the Revs resume their milestone 25th season.

The sleek white stripe across the jersey echoes the angled stripes across the '96 kit, while the blue top is complemented by red shorts similar to those worn by the Revolution's first-ever squad.
