Youth Teams Playoff Recap: June 25

FRISCO, Texas – Both the New England Revolution Under-18 and Under-16 teams were in action on Monday. The U18s played their first game of the 2012-13 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs, coming away with a 1-1 draw against the Dallas Texans, while the U16s earned a 2-1 victory against Internationals (Ohio) in their first game of the Showcase.

The Under-18s battled local side the Dallas Texans to a 1-1 draw on Monday in their first game of the Development Academy Playoffs. The Texans drew first blood, finding the back of the net in just the seventh minute of play. But the Revs pushed to equalize, and Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) – assisted by Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) – scored in the 33rd minute to do so. Dallas then had an apparent goal called back after the center official consulted his linesman in the 37th minute. Two additional Texans goals were discounted with offside rulings as the locals continued to press throughout the second half. The Revs withstood the pressure and managed to generate late chances of their own. In the 85th minute, Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) fired a shot on frame, only to have it parried over the crossbar. The teams remained knotted at the final whistle, each coming away with a point in their postseason opener.

The Under-16s earned a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Internationals in their first game of the Showcase. Brett Nanchoff put Internationals on the board in the 18th minute, putting the Revs in a hole throughout the first half. A reenergized Revolution squad took the field after the break, however, and quickly leveled the score. Amadu Kunateh (Salem, Mass.) buried his low shot in the 42nd minute, assisted by Steven Duncan (Barrington, R.I.). A series of substitutes brought fresh legs into the fold, and New England looked to be on the front foot. Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.), Aaron James (Amherst, Mass.) and Justin Rennicks (S. Hamilton, Mass.) combined deftly several times, laying off through balls and square passes in search of the game-winner. Instead, it came during a set piece, when Nick Woodruff (Attleboro, Mass.) headed home Wes Turner’s (Newton, Mass.) corner-kick service in the 79th minute, giving the Revs three points in their Showcase opener.

On Tuesday, the Under-18s will take on the San Jose Earthquakes in their second game of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET. With a rest day tomorrow, the Under-16s will play their second game of the Showcase on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET.
