While the New England Revolution hosted their annual Noche Latina y Hispana celebration over the weekend, highlighted by a 4-2 victory over Orlando City SC at Gillette Stadium, the festivities continued in Foxborough this week. On Tuesday afternoon, Revolution players and staff came together to honor Hispanic Heritage Month with a special lunch featuring authentic Mexican cuisine from La Oaxaqueña.
Based in Everett, Massachusetts, La Oaxaqueña is known for its tacos and traditional Oaxacan specialties. For the occasion, the restaurant catered a spread of empanadas, tacos, freshly prepared meats, and tres leches cake for everyone at the Revolution Training Center to enjoy. The gathering served not only as a celebration of Hispanic culture, but also to continue building a culture of togetherness across the entire Revolution organization.
“Food is a passion in the Latino community and that’s something that bonds the staff and the players together, so we always want to make sure that we are bringing in some different flavors, different cuisine, so they can all experience that and have a good time together,” explained Juliane Mahoney, the Revolution’s multicultural engagement senior specialist. “It was amazing. We had a little bit of everything here today. It was a great spread and a great way to share more of the Latino and Hispanic community here.”
Opened in 2018 by owner Felipa Celaya, La Oaxaqueña began as a small shop selling Mexican products. As demand grew, the business evolved into a restaurant, supported by the Everett community and the surrounding area.
“The community support has been just so amazing. We started as just a small store, but the people wanted a restaurant. Then we opened a taco bar in the corner, and then we expanded even more,” explained Karla Garmendia. “We are so excited to be here today. I never expected we could do something like this and meet all of the players and the staff. We feel blessed today.”
Events like Tuesday’s lunch are a reminder of how easily people can connect over a shared plate, using food as a way to celebrate culture, spark conversation, and learn more about our communities.
