FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – As someone who writes words for a living, it’s hard to find the right ones to honor a person like Andrew Farrell. The New England Revolution defender announced his retirement from professional soccer this week, following the conclusion of the 2026 MLS season. An overwhelming – but not surprising – amount of love has poured in for the larger-than-life character, who has been lighting up New England for 14 seasons.

Along with the love, a lot of tears were shed at the Revolution Training Center this week as Farrell shared the news with the team and staff – tears of joy, sadness, pride, and profound gratitude for the good fortune of existing in the same timeline as Andrew Farrell.

The Kentucky native has certainly earned legend status in New England as he is currently the longest-tenured athlete in Boston professional sports and will retire as the Revolution’s all-time leader in MLS seasons, appearances, games started, and minutes played.

By the numbers, Farrell has played 390 matches, made 368 starts, and logged 32,993 minutes in all competitions. He’s been named the Revolution Defender of the Year five times, was the 2025 Revolution Players’ Player of the Year, and helped the team lift the 2021 MLS Supporters’ Shield.

From records alone, it’s not hard to see how important Farrell has been to the Revolution, but his true impact is impossible to quantify. For his retirement press conference, teammates, staff, coaches, media, and community members filled a Gillette Stadium auditorium to pay homage to Farrell’s legendary career. But again, it wasn’t just about what he’s done on the pitch; it was about Andrew Farrell the athlete, the humanitarian, the good human being, whose speech ended in a minute-long standing ovation as he stood on stage beaming with his signature Farrell smile.

“When I was a kid, all I ever dreamed about was playing this game and I could have never imagined the places it would take me and the people I would meet,” Farrell said among thanks to everyone who helped him along his journey. “I never imagined that I’d get to spend my entire career representing one club and I’m so proud to get to represent this club. New England became so much more than a place that I played. It became my home. It became my family and it’s a place that will always hold a special place in my heart.”

While speeches from club leaders recognized the incredible athletic talent and success that Farrell had on the field with the Revs, nearly every sentence led back to one thing: his heart.

“Andrew’s playing career and on-field accomplishments are there for all of us to see, but I think his true legacy at this club is going to be defined by the connections that he’s made –connections with teammates, club staff, fans, and the greater New England community,” said former teammate, and current General Manager and Chief Soccer Officer, Chris Tierney. “It has consistently and from the beginning, for Andrew, been about the team over self. He’s always first to amplify and celebrate the accomplishments of others over his own, in such a genuine and authentic way that you rarely see in pro sports.

“I think if you were to take a poll from every Revolution player from 2013 to present and ask them who they most enjoyed playing with in New England, it would be pretty close to unanimous for Andrew Farrell, and that would include my vote.”

Organizations like Special Olympics Massachusetts and Boston Children’s Hospital also had members in the crowd, emphasizing how far beyond the confines of Gillette Stadium Farrell has made a difference. For his service, club President Brian Bilello announced that Farrell would be named the Revolution’s Humanitarian of the Year in 2026, setting a record fifth reception of the honor.

While Farrell’s playing career may be coming to a close, his time with the Revolution isn’t over. In fact, he’s just moving down a floor, from the locker room to the Revolution Academy, where he’ll continue his work in a player development and coaching role. Those lucky kids, it’s hard to imagine anyone better suited to guide the next generation of Revolution players.

“Yes, you have to have talent. Yes, you have to have certain qualities, but you have to be dedicated. You have to be relentless. That mindset of just going, and going, and going, I think that is a message for our young guys. Looking at how dedicated Andrew was to his career, it’s not just about talent, it’s everything else that you put in,” said head coach Marko Mitrović. “Sometimes we forget that we are humans, and we can forget that our first mission in this world is to be great people. Something that Andrew has never negotiated with himself or ever forgotten is to be a great person. I think that is another massive value that young players can learn from him, what it means to be a great human being.”

Mitrović was referencing the Academy players that Farrell will lead, but his message applies to all of us. Farrell has shared more than a decade of Revolution victories, defeats, memories, and milestones with New England, and fans will carry those moments with them, but perhaps the simplest takeaway from Farrell’s stunning career is this: a little kindness goes a long way, a smile can change someone’s day, and it costs nothing to be a good person.

“I’ve loved every single minute here since I stepped off the plane. I’ve seen this club grow, and the fan base grow, and the support has been unbelievable,” said Farrell. “I hope when you think of me as a player, you remember someone who cared deeply about this team and always gave everything he had.”

Farrell will be remembered exactly as he hopes, but also for so much more. Thank you, Andrew, for choosing New England, for giving this club your heart, and for sticking around for years to come. His legacy continues to be written, now in every young player who will learn what it means to wear this badge from one of the best to ever do it.
