After Carles Gil and Peyton Miller each bagged a brace in the New England Revolution’s 4-2 win over Orlando City SC in Gillette Stadium on Saturday night, the duo has received leaguewide recognition, each earning a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 27 presented by Audi.
Gil opened the scoring for the Revolution on Saturday night in the 19th minute, launching a shot from outside the box to put the Revs ahead early. 18-year-old Miller celebrated his first call up to the United States Men’s National Team by doubling New England’s lead shortly after the start of the second half. Up 2-0, the game was truly just getting started in Foxborough.
Just three minutes after Miller’s goal, Orlando responded with one of their own. While it looked like the Revs would hold onto their edge until the final whistle, a handball call against Miller gave the Lions a chance to equalize in the 88th minute from the spot. While some teams could have easily let the momentum swing toward the opponent, the Revolution refused to give up the victory.
With 10 minutes of stoppage time to play, Miller immediately took the opportunity for revenge. Three minutes into added time, the homegrown star found his seventh goal of the season and pulled the Revs ahead once more.
With over 26,000 fans in Foxborough supporting the Revs into the dying minutes, the victory already felt like New England’s, but this Revolution squad is simply never satisfied. In the 96th minute of the match, Gil put the nail in the coffin with his team-leading 12th goal of the season and set a new career best. The crowd erupted as the Revolution secured their third straight win and launched themselves to second place in the Eastern Conference table.
Miller will now join the U.S. team alongside Brooklyn Raines – who also earned his first senior call up – as the Stars and Stripes compete in a series of friendlies from September 26 to October 6. In the meantime, the Revolution look to their next match on the road against Real Salt Lake City on Saturday, September 26 in Sandy, Utah.
