FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In his second season with Revolution II, forward Liam Butts has been unstoppable. With 11 goals and two assists this season, New England’s leading scorer continues to power the team’s attack week after week.
Butts has registered eight goal contributions in his last seven appearances and is currently tied for sixth in the league in goals tallied this season. The Penn State alum was most recently named MLS NEXT Pro Player of Matchweek 24 after netting his third brace of the season in New England’s most recent win, a 3-1 triumph over Philadelphia Union II last Sunday.
When asked about his leaguewide recognition, Butts was quick to credit his teammates.
“It’s good to see that the work I’ve been putting in this year has been recognized," he said. "But, I don’t get that award without the team, the defense, the midfield, Gevork [Diarbian], Marcos [Dias], Malcolm [Fry], the backline doing their job. So, I think as much as it’s my award, it’s also a very big shining light on them.”
With last Sunday’s brace, Butts became just the second player in Revolution II history to reach double-digit goals in a single campaign. He is also only one tally shy of matching the single-season scoring record (12) held by Jordan Adebayo-Smith (2023).
“It’s always nice to hear those [records] and it kind of reaffirms that you’re doing the right things day in and day out. But for me, as long as the team has success and we do well in the regular season and playoffs, that’s all that matters to me.”

Butts’ flurry of goals this season, he said, starts with his keen awareness on the pitch.
“Just knowing where I need to be, positioning myself there, and when the opportunity comes, just being apparent and aware of where I am, and taking my opportunities,” he said.
Butts also expressed tremendous gratitude for his teammates’ ability to create scoring opportunities.
“I mean yes, I do score, but there’s a lot of work that goes into it before that," he said. "So, I think just the camaraderie and how well our team has played as a whole has really benefitted me personally.”
When asked about his favorite moment of the season, Butts did not choose one of his many goals. Instead, he mentioned a time when one of his teammates, Gevork Diarbian, netted the first brace of his career [on July 20].
“I think for Gevork, that was a great moment," Butts explained. "He’s a really big part of our team and sometimes I think the work that he does on the field is not highlighted through the stats per se, but for him to get that brace and get the recognition I think he deserves pretty much every game, I thought that was pretty cool.”
Butts has seen his career grow beyond Revolution II this year after debuting for both New England’s senior team and the Guyana Men’s National Team. The Penn State product logged his first team debut in the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 match against Rhode Island FC on May 7, and featured in the Revolution’s Starting XI in the Round of 16 clash with Chicago Fire FC two weeks later. On the international stage, Butts suited up for his first appearance with the Golden Jaguars against Nicaragua in Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers on June 6, followed by a 31-minute shift against Montserrat on June 10.

While Butts appreciates these individual career milestones so far, he remains deeply committed to the success of his team here in New England.
“Ultimately, for me, I know if I do my job and I do what I’m supposed to do, then [my success] will come and also the team’s success will come, as well," he said.
