FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution II signed defender Jon Bell to the club’s USL League One roster. The Silver Springs, Md. native was drafted 38th overall by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.
With the addition of Bell, Revolution II's roster now consists of 15 players, including fellow Silver Spring, Md. product and 2020 MLS SuperDraft pick goalkeeper Keegan Meyer. Along with Meyer and defenders Simon Lekressner and Ryo Shimazaki, Bell is one of four 2020 MLS SuperDraft picks on the Revs II squad.
Bell, 22, joins Revolution II following a four-year career at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. During his collegiate career, the left-footed defender appeared in 56 games, making 53 starts, and scored one goal with eight assists. Playing primarily on the left side of UMBC’s back line, as well as in the defensive midfield, Bell was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List at the start of the 2019 season. He played in 12 games as a junior, limited due to a preseason injury, and after setting career highs in 2017 by starting and playing in all 16 games as a sophomore. He recorded a career-best three assists in 15 appearances as a freshman in 2016.
The defender received an invitation to the United States U-20 Men’s National Team camp in January 2016 in preparation for U-20 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. During the summer of 2019, Bell also spent time with FC Baltimore Christos of the NPSL, helping guide the team to a Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship and scoring the winning goal in extra time of the Conference Championship match.
