Matt Turner called in to United States Men's National Team's January camp

Matt Turner USMNT Callup

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner has been named to the United States Men's National Team roster for its annual January Camp. Head Coach Gregg Berhalter’s 25-man squad will convene at Aspire Academy in Doha, Qatar, where it will train and play closed-door scrimmages from Jan. 5-25, before returning to Los Angeles to face Concacaf rival Costa Rica on Saturday, Feb. 1.

The selection marks Turner’s second career call-up to the U.S. Men’s National Team, following his participation in a pre-camp and Concacaf Nations League Group A action in November 2019. The 25-year-old goalkeeper was available on the bench for a pair of Group A victories against Canada on Nov. 15 and Cuba on Nov. 19. He will be seeking his first international cap when the USMNT kicks off its 2020 schedule with a friendly against Costa Rica at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. on Feb. 1.

Turner, 25, owns a 16-14-16 career record with 170 saves and 10 shutouts since signing with the Revolution as an undrafted college player ahead of the 2016 MLS season. In 2019, the Park Ridge, N.J. native registered an 8-4-7 record with 87 saves and five shutouts, with one additional start in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Poised to enter his fifth MLS season, all with New England, Turner finished the 2019 campaign ranked fourth among MLS goalkeepers in saves percentage (74.8), fifth in winning percentage (.639), and second in saves per 90 minutes (4.54). His efforts resulted in a fifth-place finish in Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year voting, and earned him a multi-year contract extension with New England on Aug. 21, 2019.

Berhalter’s 25-man January Camp roster is comprised of 22 MLS players representing 14 different MLS clubs. Turner is one of 13 uncapped players on the roster. The U.S. Men’s National Team is gearing up for two significant competitions in 2020, beginning with the Concacaf Nations League semifinal against Honduras in June, followed by FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM qualifying in the fall.
