RECAP: Revs close out August with frustrating 1-0 loss to Philadelphia Union

CHESTER, Penn. – The New England Revolution (7-10-8, 29 pts.) fell to the Philadelphia Union (11-11-3, 36 pts.), 1-0, at Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday evening. Union forward Cory Burke scored the game's lone goal in the 53rd minute, when he beat goalkeeper Matt Turner with a right-footed shot. The goal was initially ruled offside, but was overturned after Video Review.


More than 600 Season Members traveled down to Philadelphia to support the Revolution at tonight's match as a benefit of their membership. Earlier this season, more than 700 Season Members bussed to New Jersey to support New England in its match against the New York Red Bulls on July 21.


Midfielder Cristhian Machado made his first career MLS start in tonight's contest. The Bolivian international, who signed with New England on July 23, played 71 minutes in central midfield. He previously made his debut as a second-half substitute on Aug. 4 at Orlando. Another summer transfer window addition, defender Michael Mancienne, made a second consecutive start in central defense. He played all 90 minutes for a second straight week, having also gone the distance against D.C. United last Sunday.


New England returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 1, when it returns to Gillette Stadium for a matchup with the Portland Timbers. The contest kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Boston. Fans may also listen on the radio in English on 98.5 The Sports Hub and in Portuguese on 1260 AM Nossa Radio.

  • The Revolution fell to the Philadelphia Union, 1-0 on Saturday evening to move to 7-10-8 (29 points) on the season. The loss drops New England to 1-6-5 in away matches in 2018.

More Than 600 Revolution Supporters Travel to Talen Energy Stadium

  • The Revolution had the support of more than 600Season Members at Talen Energy Stadium for tonight's match.
  • As a benefit of their membership, Season Members are offered the opportunity to support the Revolution at one of two away games.
  • New England also hosted more than 700 Season Members for the club's match on July 21 at New York Red Bull.


Machado Makes First Career MLS Start

  • Midfielder Cristhian Machado made his first career MLS start in tonight's match.
  • Machado recorded four tackles, one foul won, and 30 touches in 71 minutes of play.
  • The Bolivian international, who signed with New England on July 23, previously made his MLS and Revolution debut as a late second-half substitute on Aug. 4 at Orlando.


Mancienne Starts Second Consecutive Match in Central Defense

  • Defender Michael Mancienne, who made his MLS and Revolution debut at D.C. United last weekend, played 90 minutes at center back for a second consecutive match in tonight's contest.
  • Mancienne registered one tackle, one foul won, 55 touches, and an 82.5 passing accuracy rate.


Revolution Make Three Changes to Starting XI

  • Revolution Head Coach Brad Friedel made three changes to the club’s starting lineup from its most recent match at D.C. United on Aug. 19. Midfielder Cristhian Machado, midfielder Wilfried Zahibo, and defender Jalil Anibaba replaced forward Teal Bunbury, midfielder Scott Caldwell, defender Antonio Delamea.
  • Caldwell was suspended for tonight's match after he was issued a red card against D.C. United last weekend. 
  • Bunbury was ruled out for tonight's match after picking up a minor injury in training on Friday.
