CHESTER, Penn. – The New England Revolution (7-10-8, 29 pts.) fell to the Philadelphia Union (11-11-3, 36 pts.), 1-0, at Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday evening. Union forward Cory Burke scored the game's lone goal in the 53rd minute, when he beat goalkeeper Matt Turner with a right-footed shot. The goal was initially ruled offside, but was overturned after Video Review.
More than 600 Season Members traveled down to Philadelphia to support the Revolution at tonight's match as a benefit of their membership. Earlier this season, more than 700 Season Members bussed to New Jersey to support New England in its match against the New York Red Bulls on July 21.
Midfielder Cristhian Machado made his first career MLS start in tonight's contest. The Bolivian international, who signed with New England on July 23, played 71 minutes in central midfield. He previously made his debut as a second-half substitute on Aug. 4 at Orlando. Another summer transfer window addition, defender Michael Mancienne, made a second consecutive start in central defense. He played all 90 minutes for a second straight week, having also gone the distance against D.C. United last Sunday.
New England returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 1, when it returns to Gillette Stadium for a matchup with the Portland Timbers. The contest kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Boston. Revolution Make Three Changes to Starting XI
- Revolution Head Coach Brad Friedel made three changes to the club’s starting lineup from its most recent match at D.C. United on Aug. 19. Midfielder Cristhian Machado, midfielder Wilfried Zahibo, and defender Jalil Anibaba replaced forward Teal Bunbury, midfielder Scott Caldwell, defender Antonio Delamea.
- Caldwell was suspended for tonight's match after he was issued a red card against D.C. United last weekend.
- Bunbury was ruled out for tonight's match after picking up a minor injury in training on Friday.
