Revs re-sign Chris Tierney

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution has re-signed Chris Tierney. A natural left midfielder, the Wellesley, Mass., product played a league-high seven positions in 2010, his third season with the club. Per Major League Soccer and team policies, terms of the deal were not released.


Tierney, 25, made a career-high 27 regular-season appearances – and 33 appearances overall – last year. He started 26 league matches at left midfield, left back, central midfield and right back. Additionally, he also saw time at defensive midfield, attacking midfield and center back throughout the season, including SuperLiga, U.S. Open Cup and friendly matches. He scored one goal and added four assists in 2010, both career highs. His three game-winning assists led the team and were tied for seventh in MLS.


“Chris is a very versatile player and gives us a lot of options on the field,” Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. “He is also a great leader for us on the field and in the locker room so we're pleased he is committing to the club."


Tierney has made 47 career MLS appearances, including 43 starts, after the Revolution drafted him in the first round (13th overall) in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft. He later signed with the team on June 3, 2008, after completing his degree at the University of Virginia, where he was a four-year letterwinner with the Cavaliers. He played his prep soccer at Noble & Greenough in Dedham, Mass.
