Youth Update: November 18

U14s vs. Match Fit - Youth teams

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution youth teams posted a combined 3-1-0 record last weekend, as the Under-18s and Under-16s met BSC CT Academy at University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Conn., on Saturday, Nov. 16, and the Under-14s traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s U13/U14 East Regional Event.

The U18s earned a 3-0 shutout victory against BSC CT before the U16s suffered a 3-2 loss, while the U14s recorded a pair of wins against Jacksonville FC and D.C. United – 3-2 and 3-1, respectively.

UNDER-18s

The Under-18s shut out BSC CT Academy, 3-0, on Saturday, behind a Gabe Gissie (Worcester, Mass.) hat trick. His first goal – a penalty kick – came in the 18th minute after Freddie Ferre (Waltham, Mass.) was brought down in the box, drawing the call. Ferre was then shown a red card in the second half and the Revs played the remaining 28 minutes down a man. Gissie scored his second in the 66th minute after stripping the ball off a BSC defender and calmly slotting it home. Pouncing on a mis-kick in the 89th minute, Gissie netted his third goal right before the final whistle. Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) made two saves en route to his first – and the U18s’ second – shut out of the season. Now 4-4-1 (13 pts.) on the season, the U18s jumped to fifth place in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy with 1.44 points per game.

UNDER-16s

The Under-16s suffered a 3-2 loss to BSC CT Academy on Saturday, battling back to equalize twice before conceding the late game-winner. BSC’s Lucas Pereira scored in the 25th minute to give the home side a lead into the second half, but the teams would combine to produce four more goals before full time. Eddie Venta-Yepes (Lowell, Mass.) equalized in the 56th minute, collecting the ball from outside the box and converting his half-volley. Sean Dedrick then put BSC ahead in the 66th minute, and the Revs answered again in the 71st. Venta-Yepes sent his free kick into the box and past the goalkeeper, where Ben Waithe (Plymouth, Mass.) waited to head the ball home. But in the final minute of play, BSC’s Pereira scored his second goal on the day, handing the Revs a road loss. With a 3-4-2 (11 pts.) record, the Revs remain in seventh place in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference with 1.22 points per game.

UNDER-14s

The Under-14s earned a pair of wins during the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s U13/U14 East Regional Event. In the first match against Jacksonville FC, Issac Angking (Providence, R.I.), Justin Rennicks (S. Hamilton, Mass.) and Joe Brito (Bolton, Conn.) scored one goal apiece, while Travis Van Brewer (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Alex Shterenberg (Westwood, Mass.) added assists to lead the Revs to a 3-2 victory.

On Sunday, the Revs then took on D.C. United and Rennicks, Angking and Chris Ciullo (Mansfield, Mass.) each scored en route to the 3-1 win. Amos Shapiro (Worthington, Mass.) and Rennicks also picked up assists. The Under-14s are now 6-2-1 (19 pts.) on the season.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

The U18s and U16s have a break from competition until Dec. 11-15, when they travel to Sarasota, Fla., to compete in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase. The U18s are scheduled to play FC Dallas, D.C. United and the U.S. YNT Showcase Team, while the U16s will face the Portland Timbers, Shattuck-Saint Mary’s and Sporting Kansas City.

While the U14s will continue to train alongside the older squads, they have completed the fall portion of the 2013-14 Development Academy schedule and will next play BSC CT Academy in Bridgeport, Conn., on Saturday, March 1, 2014.
