Trio of Caicedo, Kaptoum, Mafla return to training, eye preseason debuts soon

Caicedo Kaptoum Mafla trio

LOS ANGELES – Three players who have been sidelined for the New England Revolution’s first two preseason games – Luis Caicedo, Wilfrid Kaptoum, and Christian Mafla – have returned to full training and have their sights set on featuring at some point in the Revs’ final three preseason matches.

Caicedo and Mafla were both officially dressed and available for Wednesday night’s 4-1 win over the LA Galaxy, but didn’t play as sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena used two different XIs for 45 minutes apiece. The duo trained again on Thursday, and could be ready to see minutes as soon as Saturday afternoon’s meeting with Los Angeles FC (2 p.m. ET).

“They practiced today,” Arena said on Thursday. “They’ll be ready to start getting some time in over the next week or so.”

Kaptoum – like Mafla, a new signing for the 2021 season – has not dressed for either of the first two preseason games, but he was also in training on Thursday and Arena anticipates he’ll be ready before the Revs return to the East Coast on April 10 to make final preparations for the season opener.

“Kaptoum, next week we think we’ll see him on the field on a regular basis,” Arena said. “Hopefully we can get him in one of our practice games next week, and hopefully have him ready for the regular season.”
