The inclusive power of sports shines as Revs host 11th annual Unified Signing Day

Unified Signing Day (1)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The Revolution roster continues to grow, as 19 new players signed with the club on May 14, when the Revolution held the 11th annual Unified Team Signing Day in partnership with Special Olympics Massachusetts and the Arbella Insurance Group. The ceremony celebrated the newest members of the Revolution Unified Team – comprised of Special Olympics athletes and local Unified partner athletes – who signed contracts to join the squad as official players.

“Throughout tryouts there were a lot of really good players, and it’s very exciting to see them all sign their contracts today,” said Revolution defender Wyatt Omsberg, who was there to support players as they joined the squad. “They earned the right to be on the team. I’m very happy to have them be a part of the Revolution.”

Among the players signing their names on the dotted line was Radley Theolien, a standout athlete and MLS Unified All-Star, now entering his fourth season with the club.

“It means the world to me to be able to sign with the New England Revolution, one of my favorite teams. I really enjoy this moment,” he said following the ceremony inside the Sports Illustrated Pavilion at Gillette Stadium. “This is a moment for me to cherish.”

Theolien, a native of Dorchester, Massachusetts, has been a Revolution fan for more than a decade. To wear New England’s crest, he explained, inspires the goal-scoring forward to continue pursuing his dreams.

Now a seasoned veteran, Theolien had wise words to share with his new teammates.

“You’ve got to work hard, and we have to do what we have to do every single day. When we step on that pitch, practice facility, or anything, you just have to work hard,” he said. “The biggest thing for me is communication. The biggest thing is to be able to communicate, knowing where to position yourself day in and day out, and figuring out where to go with that. Communication is key and that’s how we’re going to do it.”

On signing day, the players were able to meet Revolution head coach Caleb Porter, who provided the team with a preseason pep talk to motivate them throughout the road ahead. Along with Omsberg, Revolution defenders Andrew Farrell and Tanner Beason were also in attendance to celebrate the club’s newest additions.

Unified Signing Day (2)

“It’s a first step in a pretty long journey. They did have to try out and make the team, but what we love about today is, especially for the new players, they come in really excited, really wide-eyed, and the great thing is that the Revs really wow the players with the presentation,” explained Special Olympics Massachusetts AVP of Development, Brand and Marketing Charles Hirsch. “What we expect is the team to go all in, to put the efforts into training and really show the club the respect that it deserves.”

The Revolution Unified Team will play two matches this season, reinforcing the club’s commitment to inclusion, representation, and support for Special Olympics Massachusetts. The squad will kick off its 2025 campaign with a home match at Gillette Stadium against the Colorado Rapids Unified Team on June 28, immediately following the Revolution’s Pride Night matchup with Colorado’s first team.

The Unified squad will close out the season with a road match in Charlotte, taking on Charlotte FC’s Unified Team on July 12. Fans can continue to support the cause beyond the pitch by attending the annual Bowl for a Goal, benefiting Special Olympics Massachusetts and hosted in partnership with the Revolution and Arbella Insurance, on July 30 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Patriot Place.

“The key for us is making sure that everyone is included on the playing field. What this program does is make sure that our athletes and our unified partners are included on one of the most important playing surfaces, certainly in New England, getting to represent themselves, their communities, and the Revolution Unified program on the pitch of Gilette,” said Hirsch. “Hopefully thousands of fans stick around to watch our game. I think that’s inclusion to me.”

Unified Signing Day (3)

For many Revolution players, Unified Signing Day isn’t just a highlight of the year – it’s a reminder of the power sports have to unite and uplift. Omsberg reflected on the day’s significance, noting how events like these go far beyond the pitch.

“There’s a couple of games and hopefully they don’t stress too much about that,” he said with a smile. “It’s all about having fun and being inclusive and building a community. The club has done a really good job of that since I’ve been here this year, and I’ve been really impressed with all the community work that the club does. This is a really good example of it, and I’m just excited to have some new teammates.”

As the Unified Team embarks on its new season, the message on signing day was clear: it’s more than just soccer. It’s about teamwork, empowerment, and creating a lasting impact on and off the field.
