Tajon Buchanan called in to Canada Men’s National Team for 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder Tajon Buchanan has been called into the Canada Men’s National Team for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. Buchanan has been selected by Canada Head Coach John Herdman as part of a 23-player roster for the three-week continental tournament. Click here to view the Canada Men’s National Team’s full roster.

Buchanan, 22, made his Canada Men’s National Team debut last month in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, recording a two-assist performance and a full 90-minute shift in a 7-0 win over Aruba. The Brampton, Ontario native followed his first international start with three consecutive performances as a substitute, helping the Canucks to victories over Suriname and Haiti. Buchanan accepted his first career call up to Canada’s senior team for its January 2021 training camp, before featuring in all four of the Under-23 side’s matches at the 2020 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship, which was played in March 2021. His tournament was highlighted by a first-half brace in Canada’s opening game against El Salvador. Buchanan was named the Canadian Youth International Player of the Year following a breakout 2020 season that saw him lead all Canadian MLS players in games played.

Currently in his third MLS season, Buchanan owns 44 career appearances, including 23 starts, with four goals and six assists. This season, he has collected two goals and two assists through 11 games played. After making 10 appearances during his rookie campaign in 2019, he became a fixture in the Revolution’s lineup in 2020 and finished the year as one of two Revs players to appear in all 23 regular season games. He played an instrumental role in helping New England reach the Eastern Conference Final by starting all four MLS Cup Playoff games at right back and scoring the game-winning goal in Round One against Philadelphia.

Buchanan was originally selected by New England with the ninth-overall selection in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft following a standout career at Syracuse University and is the second Revolution player to receive a call for international duty in the Concacaf Gold Cup, following goalkeeper Matt Turner’s selection to the U.S. Men’s National Team.

The 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup is the 16th edition of the continental tournament. The 16-team competition kicks off on July 10, with the tournament final scheduled for Aug. 1 at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nev. The Canada Men’s National Team is slotted in Group B along with the United States and Martinique. To view the complete 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup schedule click here
