Bobby Shuttleworth vs. NYCFC

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution (4-7-7; 19 pts.) fell to New York City FC (8-5-6; 30 pts.), 1-0, at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday evening. Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth made four saves, but conceded the game’s lone goal to NYCFC’s Frank Lampard in the 58th minute, as the midfielder redirected a cross from Thomas McNamara past the Revs’ goalkeeper with his knee.


Forwards Kei Kamara, Teal Bunbury, and Femi Hollinger-Janzen paced New England in shots with two apiece, while defender Chris Tierney led the club with three chances created. Defender Je-Vaughn Watson earned the start at right back and also contributed two chances created. Defender Andrew Farrell made the first substitute appearance of his MLS career, entering the game in the 79th minute. Farrell entered the contest as the only Revolution player to see every minute of action during the 2016 regular season, but saw his consecutive minutes played streak come to an end at 1,530 minutes.


The Revolution will be back in action at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, July 9, when the club faces Columbus Crew SC at 7:30 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast locally on Comcast SportsNet. Revolution Drop Second Home Match of 2016

With tonight’s loss, the Revolution move to 4-7-7 (19 pts.) on the season, with a 3-2-4 record at Gillette Stadium. With the result, the Revs remain in eighth place in the Eastern Conference.


Tonight’s game marked the Revolution’s fourth Wednesday game in all competitions, including two in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The loss drops the Revs to 2-1-1 overall in midweek contests, with both wins coming in the U.S. Open Cup at Carolina RailHawks FC on June 15 and at the New York Cosmos on June 29.


Farrell Makes First MLS Substitute Appearance, Snapping Minutes Streak

Defender Andrew Farrell made the first substitute appearance of his four-year MLS career when he replaced defender Je-Vaughn Watson in the 79th minute. Including the postseason, Farrell has now played in a total of 120 MLS games, the first 119 of which were starts. In the regular season, he has played in 114 MLS games with 113 starts.


Farrell was held out of the starting lineup for the first time since July 4, 2015 at FC Dallas. Entering tonight, the Revolution defender was the only member of the club to play 1,530 minutes of the regular season, as he started each of the team’s first 17 contests.


Revolution Total Season-High 11 Corner Kicks

The Revolution earned a season-high 11 corner kicks in the match, topping the campaign’s previous high of 10 corners against the Portland Timbers on April 28, 2016.


The team’s 11 corner kicks mark the Revolution’s most in a single match since earning 14 corners against the Philadelphia Union in a 1-1 draw on Sept. 27, 2015.


Tierney and Watson Create Multiple Chances

Defender Chris Tierney led the team with three chances created in the match, improving his total to 24 chances created in the 2016 regular season. Tierney continues to lead all MLS defenders in chances created and is one of only two defenders, along with D.C. United’s Taylor Kemp (20), to create at least 20 chances this season.


Defender Je-Vaughn Watson also generated some offense for the Revolution, finishing the game with two chances created in 79 minutes of action. He has now created nine chances this season, the second most among defenders on the team.


Woodberry Leads Revs in Passing Accuracy

Revolution defender London Woodberry had his second best passing performance of the season in terms of accuracy (min. 20 passes). Woodberry completed 41-of-47 passes for an accuracy mark of 87.23 percent.


Woodberry is just the fifth Revolution defender this season to have a passing accuracy of at least 85 percent while attempting 40-or-more passes.


Shuttleworth Returns to Net, Notches Four Saves

Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth returned to the starting lineup in a League match for the first time since May 28 vs. Seattle. The start was Shuttleworth’s 15th regular season appearance in 2016. Goalkeeper Brad Knighton started in the Revs’ last three MLS games prior to tonight.


Shuttleworth posted four saves in the match, his most in a single game since recording five stops on May 8, 2016 at Los Angeles.


Shuttleworth was sent off with a red card in the 90th minute for a foul on New York City FC’s Khiry Shelton. Following Shuttleworth’s departure, Revolution defender José Gonçalves played in goal for the Revolution and did not face a shot from New York City FC.


Fagundez Returns to Starting XI, Plays 90 Minutes

Midfielder Diego Fagundez returned to the starting lineup for the first time since May 28 vs. Seattle. Fagundez made three consecutive substitute appearances on June 18 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC, June 25 at D.C. United, and July 2 at Montreal Impact.


Fagundez played 90 minutes for the first time since May 8 at Los Angeles. Overall, Fagundez has started and played 90 minutes eight times this season.

8th minute (CHANCE) – Midfielder Lee Nguyen leads midfielder Kelyn Rowe into the scoring area with a perfectly chipped past. Rowe is tackled from behind, but still makes contact with the ball, which nearly rolls into the net, but catches the post instead (WATCH HERE).


17th minute (SAVE) – Bobby Shuttleworth makes a highlight-reel save, fully extending to his left to punch a powerful right-footed shot from Ronald Matarrita to safety, keeping the match scoreless (WATCH HERE).


30th minute (CHANCE) – Defender Chris Tierney connects with forward Teal Bunbury on a curling, bouncing cross in front of the net. Bunbury tries to beat New York City FC goalkeeper Josh Saunders with a bouncing, headed shot, but it sails just above the crossbar (WATCH HERE).


52nd minute (CHANCE) – Chris Tierney’s free kick attempt from just outside of the 18-yard-box is blocked by NYCFC’s wall, but Kei Kamara picks up the rebound a smashes a shot that curls just wide of the net (WATCH HERE).


74th minute (CHANCE) – Another chance generated by Tierney, as he sends a cross from the right flank into the box. Both Femi Hollinger-Janzen and London Woodberry nearly get a touch on it to equalize the score, but neither can connect.


92nd minute (CHANCE) – Still seeking an equalizer in the 92nd minute, the Revolution nearly knotted the score off a corner kick. London Woodberry headed Lee Nguyen’s attempt from the left corner flag into the mix, but Josh Saunders made a sprawling save to protect NYCFC’s lead (WATCH HERE).
