FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (May 18, 2024) – The New England Revolution (2-9-1; 7 pts.) fell, 3-0, to the Philadelphia Union (4-4-5, 17 pts.) on Saturday night in front of 34,947 fans at Gillette Stadium. An early red card to Ryan Spaulding in the 14th minute forced New England to play with 10 men for the final 76 minutes of the match. The Revolution battled through the one-man disadvantage to create several scoring chances, but it was Philadelphia who broke the deadlock in the 38th minute and extended the lead with two second-half goals.
After starting the match on the front foot, New England was reduced to 10 men in the 14th minute when Spaulding was shown a red card for bringing down Philadelphia’s Mikael Uhre from behind, a foul the referee deemed denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. The Revolution continued to apply pressure despite the setback, though Philadelphia finally took advantage in the 38th minute when Julian Carranza headed home a cross from Jack McGlynn. Dániel Gazdag added to the Union lead on the other side of halftime with goals in the 47th and 80th minutes.
In tonight’s match, Revolution forward Dylan Borrero started for the first time this season as he made his fourth appearance back from injury. The young Colombian’s best chance came in first half stoppage time, receiving a pass in behind before being denied from a narrow angle by Union goalkeeper Oliver Semmle. Defender DeJuan Jones made his first appearance as a second-half substitute after missing the last four matches. Fellow outside back Nick Lima suited up for his 175th MLS start on Saturday. In net for New England, Aljaž Ivačič recorded seven saves in his home debut for the club.
