CURRENT FORM

New England Revolution
11th in Eastern Conference (5-4-3, 18 pts.)

Last Result (MLS) | 0-0 draw vs. San Jose Earthquakes
Last Result (U.S. Open Cup) | 2-1 win at Rhode Island FC

The Revolution remain unbeaten in their last six league games (4-0-2), after they shut out the San Jose Earthquakes in this past Saturday night’s 0-0 draw at Gillette Stadium. The clean sheet marked goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič’s sixth of the season, as the Revolution remain one of the best defensive teams in the league.

After denying high-scoring San Jose, New England have proven their ability to thwart even the most aggressive attacks in MLS. As they look to advance in Open Cup play, their defensive fortitude will be tested once again on Tuesday night as they face another of the league’s highest-scoring sides in Chicago.

Chicago Fire FC
9th in Eastern Conference (5-4-4, 19 pts.)

Last Result (MLS) | 4-1 win at Charlotte FC
Last Result (U.S. Open Cup) | 4-0 win vs. Detroit City FC

Chicago have established themselves as one of the highest-scoring teams in the Eastern Conference, with 24 goals through 13 games. Although boasting an aggressive attack, Chicago has conceded as much as they’ve scored. With 24 goals against, Chicago is the second-most scored upon team in the East, while they’ve conceded the third-most goals in all of MLS.

In their most recent fixture, Chicago had three players get on the scoreboard – emphasizing their strength across the pitch. Finding two of their four goals in Charlotte was 21-year-old midfielder Brian Gutiérrez, bringing his tally to five goals in 2025. Likely to line up similarly to their previous U.S. Open Cup match, Chicago are expected to put out a strong squad at Providence College.

KEY PLAYERS

Revolution defender Andrew Farrell
Veteran defender Andrew Farrell has clocked more minutes than any player in Revolution history. Since being selected by New England as the first overall SuperDraft pick in 2013, Farrell has played all 13 seasons of his MLS career in Foxborough. Likely to wear the captain’s armband on Tuesday night, Farrell is the only current Revolution player who was on the squad in 2016, when New England went all the way to the U.S. Open Cup Final.

As the Revolution plan to play a heavily rotated group against Chicago, Farrell’s senior influence will be vital with so many young players being brought up to play. Known not only for his heroic defending on the pitch, he is also championed for his mentorship and leadership in the locker room. Farrell will be an integral part of New England’s performance, as the club continues to develop young talent.

Fire forward Hugo Cuypers
Hugo Cuypers is currently one of the highest-scoring players in the league with eight goals so far this season. The Belgian attacker has started every match for the Fire in 2025, with 10 overall goal contributions and 43 shots – more than half of which he has placed on target.

In their last appearance at Charlotte FC, Cuypers had seven shots, with two on target. Responsible for one-third of Chicago’s goals this season, Cuypers is an obvious attacking threat. New England will need to slow him down in the attacking third as Chicago will be looking to get him the ball.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Head coach Caleb Porter on the confidence he has in the younger players who will get opportunities to play in Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup match against Chicago Fire FC:
“I have a lot of confidence in our young players. When I say we’re using this game for development, it doesn’t mean that we’re trying to lose the game. Winning is a part of development. For me, we have to take this opportunity to give some of the young guys a run, a look, and give them a development opportunity. It’s at Providence College, nice little venue there. It’s intimate, four or five thousand [fans]. We’re going to approach it like a home game, obviously. Players will drive there, so on and so forth. We’re playing a good team in Chicago. They’ll probably play most of their starters. We’re going to play mostly reserves, guys that we need to keep fit and in-form, and young guys.”

Porter on the importance of younger players getting minutes for their development:
“It’s critical. You have to bridge the gap from where they’re at and where they need to be. These Open Cup games are great opportunities to do that. You saw Cristiano [Oliveira], he made a jump by being able to go into that game and score a goal. He gained confidence, and I could see it in training last week. We’re hoping to continue to take steps forward with these young players. The only way you do that is to put them in these types of games, under pressure with a crowd. Obviously, training helps but they really need games. I’m happy to give a lot of these young guys games. Also, we have some guys that need to stay fit and in-form. Guys like Andrew Farrell, Wyatt Omsberg, Keegan Huges, and Alex Bono. These guys need to get a game as well.”

Porter on what he expects from Chicago Fire FC:
“[Chicago Fire FC] are much improved. There’s a clear philosophy. That’s the big difference. There’s confidence now. When you’re getting results, there’s confidence. We know what [Chicago Fire FC] are going to look to do in the game, for sure. We talked to the guys today about those things and the plan. We’re going to do everything we can to try to advance but we’re going to do it with different guys. Then that will set up this weekend’s game for us, which is then followed by another midweek game, then another game on the weekend. So, it’s a very busy stretch. If we do end up rotating next week, we need these guys to be available. The only way to approach this game with such a tight turnaround from Saturday to Tuesday is to rotate.”
