The Revolution are led into the postseason by third-time Revolution Team MVP Carles Gil, New England’s captain who paced the team with 11 goals and 15 assists during the regular season. Along with newcomer Tomás Chancalay, a 24-year-old from Argentina who has contributed six goals in only 11 appearances, Gil is also benefiting from having his longtime attacking partner Gustavo Bou back in full stride. Bou found the net twice in the season finale against Philadelphia, including the game winner assisted by Gil.

New England’s strong midfield is anchored by Matt Polster, who owns 100 starts in a Revolution uniform across all competitions, and 18-year-old Homegrown Player Noel Buck, who started 20 league games in his second MLS season. On the backline, Revolution Defender of the Year Dave Romney has been the defensive anchor on the field for every minute of the 2023 season, while United States international DeJuan Jones provides pace and an attacking threat on the flanks. In net, second-year pro Jacob Jackson started the last two games of the season and posted a win against Philadelphia in his home debut.

The fourth-place Union, coached by the reigning MLS Coach of the Year Jim Curtin, return to the playoffs after finishing as MLS Cup runners-up in 2022. On paper, New England and Philadelphia present an even matchup with identical 15-9-10 records and similar scoring totals of 58 and 57 goals, respectively. Captained by midfielder Alejandro Bedoya, Philadelphia looks to Julian Carranza and Dániel Gazdag for its scoring, as the pair share the team lead with 14 goals each. Acclaimed Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake is protected in net by a talented backline that includes Jakob Glesnes, Jack Elliott, and Kai Wagner.
