Player and Team Notes: Revolution at New York Cosmos

U.S. OPEN CUP PLAYER NOTES

Midfielder Kelyn Rowe leads active Revolution players and ranks second in club history with six goals in eight career Open Cup appearances. Four of Rowe’s six goals came in the 2013 tournament, when he recorded braces against the Rochester Rhinos on May 28, 2013, and the New York Red Bulls on June 12, 2013. 


Homegrown Player Zachary Herivaux scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute of the Revolution’s Fourth Round win against the Carolina RailHawks. It was the midfielder’s first professional start. Herivaux entered the match six minutes of professional experience, but played a full, 120-minute shift in the win. 


Forwards Kei Kamara and Teal Bunbury lifted Sporting Kansas City to the 2012 Open Cup title. Kamara scored Sporting’s lone goal in the final vs. Seattle Sounders FC and converted a penalty kick in the game-deciding shootout. Bunbury has three goals ane one assist in his Open Cup career. 


Forward Juan Agudelo and defender Chris Tierney each have one goal and two assists in the Open Cup, while midfielder Lee Nguyen has one goal and three assists. Agudelo had one goal and one assist as a member of Chivas USA in 2013, earlier adding one assist for the Red Bulls in 2011. Nguyen picked up his third career Open Cup assist in the club’s Fourth Round win against Carolina. He also registered one assist against the Rochester Rhinos (USL) on June 25, 2014, and added a goal, an assist against the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL) on May 29, 2012. Tierney notched two assists as a rookie in 2008 and added his lone Open Cup goal against New York on June 12, 2013. 


Midfielder Steve Neumann has one goal and one assist in the Open Cup, both coming in the Revolution’s Fourth Round win against the Richmond Kickers on June 18, 2014. That goal was his first as a professional. 


Defender London Woodberry has one career Open Cup goal, which he scored for Arizona United (USL) against the Portland Timbers U-23s in a 3-2 comeback win on May 13, 2014. 


Defender Darrius Barnes has two assists in the Open Cup, both coming in the 2013 campaign. He set up a Chad Barrett goal in the Fourth Round against Rochester on May 28, 2013, before assisting on a Dimitry Imbongo goal in a 4-2 win vs. the Red Bulls in the Fifth Round on June 12, 2013. 


Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth has four appearances in the Open Cup, posting a 2.66 goals against average and no shutouts. 


U.S. OPEN CUP TEAM NOTES
ALL-TIME IN THE OPEN CUP 

This will mark New England’s 17th appearance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The club has accrued a 16-13-4 record in its last 33 games in the competition. The Revs are 10-4-2 at home and to 6-8-2 on the road, and were crowned champions in the 2007 tournament. 


REVS, COSMOS MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME 

Wednesday’s match marks the first ever meeting between the Revolution and New York Cosmos in a competitive match. 


NEW ENGLAND DEFEATS RAILHAWKS IN EXTRA TIME 

The Revs defeated the Carolina RailHawks,1-0, in the Fourth Round of the Open Cup on June 15 to secure a spot in the Round of 16. Despite a 134-minute rain delay, New England advanced to the Round of 16 for the 10th time in club history. Homegrown Player Zachary Herviaux, making his first professional start, scored the game’s lone goal in the 103rd minute - the latest game-winning goal in club history across all competitions. Defender Jordan McCrary, selected by New England with the 10th overall pick in January’s SuperDraft, started and played all 120 minutes in his professional debut.

REVS ARE REGULARS IN U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINALS 

The Revolution have reached the quarterfinal round of the Open Cup seven times, including appearances in the 2001 and 2007 Open Cup Final. Every year that the Revs have reached the quarterfinal, the team that has defeated them - with the exception of 2007 when New England won the Open Cup - has gone on to reach the Open Cup Final. 


A LOOK BACK AT 2015 

The Revolution were eliminated by the Charlotte Independence (USL) in the Fourth Round of last year’s tournament, suffering a 1-0 defeat at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium. Charlotte’s Jorge Herrera scored the match’s only goal in the 55th minute against a New England lineup was led by a core of young players and reserves. Zachary Herivaux, the Revolution’s third ever Homegrown Player signing, made his professional debut when he replaced Daigo Kobayashi as a substitute in the 87th minute. 


HOW NEW ENGLAND FARES AGAINST NASL, USL 

Wednesday night’s match marks the 20th time the Revs will face a non-MLS team in the Open Cup. The Revs are 11-4-4 in their previous 19 games against lower-division sides in tournament play. 


All four of New England’s draws were decided on penalties. The Revs fell in the 2004 and 2012 Open Cups on penalty kicks to Rochester and Harrisburg City, respectively. However, the Revs won the 2006 Fourth Round against Rochester and the 2008 Quarterfinals against Crystal Palace Baltimore on penalties. 


OPEN CUP GOAL SCORERS 

Eleven current Revolution players have scored at least one goal in the Open Cup, with Kelyn Rowe leading the way with six goals in the competition. Of those 11 players, five - Zachary Herivaux, Steve Neumann, Lee Nguyen, Rowe, and Chris Tierney - have scored as a member of the Revolution, while Juan Agudelo, Teal Bunbury, Kei Kamara, and London Woodberry have scored for other clubs.
