FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Jermaine Jones scored the game-winning goal for the second consecutive game, heading in a Chris Tierney free kick to give the New England Revolution (15-13-3, 48 pts.) a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew (11-10-10, 43 pts.) at Gillette Stadium. Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth made six saves on the night en route to earning his 14th victory of the season.


With the win, the Revolution claimed sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of Sporting Kansas City and four points behind first-place D.C. United.


Lee Nguyen opened the scoring in the 20th minute, getting on the end of a Teal Bunbury cross and slotting a shot past Columbus goalkeeper Steve Clark. The goal was Nguyen’s team-best 14th of the season, which sets a new Revolution record for goals by a midfielder.


The lead would last just five minutes before Columbus equalized through Ethan Finlay. Tony Tchani played him in behind the Revolution defense and Finlay rolled a shot past Shuttleworth and inside the far post, leveling the score at 1-1.


Shortly after New England had gone in front, the Crew were reduced to 10 men when defender Waylon Francis was ejected after being shown his second yellow card of the game.

  • With the win, the Revs are now 15-13-3 on the season for 48 points … they are two points ahead of Sporting Kansas City for second place in the Eastern Conference and four points behind D.C. United for first place with three games remaining in the regular season.
  • New England’s 15 wins are one more than the club had in 2013 and tied for the second-most in club history.
