FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution re-signed forward Teal Bunbury to a multi-year contract. An 11th-year MLS player, Bunbury will resume his seventh season with New England on Friday, July 17 in the MLS is Back Tournament, currently tied for eighth on the Revolution’s all-time goal-scoring list.


“I’ve had the pleasure to work with Teal Bunbury over the past year, and have found him to be an invaluable part of our team and organization,” Revolution Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena said. “Teal’s contributions on the field speak for themselves and he has been an important part of our team’s re-building efforts. Off the field, Teal represents the Revolution in a first-class manner and we are honored that he will remain as a member of the Revolution.”


For his MLS career, the Hamilton, Ontario native has totaled 272 games played, 185 starts, 54 goals and 27 assists across 16,730 minutes played. Since joining New England ahead of the 2014 campaign, Bunbury has tallied 35 goals with 20 assists with the Revolution. In the MLS Cup Playoffs, he has made an additional 12 appearances, including seven with New England, five of which were starts during the club’s run to the 2014 MLS Cup Final. En route to that Eastern Conference Championship, Bunbury contributed two goals and two assists.


“This is a special moment for myself and my family. This isn’t my first time re-signing with the Revolution, but I think it’s a special time with the place the club is heading,” Bunbury said. “The Kraft family, Bruce Arena and the rest of the coaching staff have been phenomenal. It’s a place I wanted to continue to be a part of, help continue to try to be a leader, continue to work hard for this club, this organization, and the community. I’m really grateful.” 


After joining the Revolution via a trade from Kansas City in 2014, the United States international made an immediate impact in his first season, setting then-career highs with 31 games played, 28 starts, and six assists. He has appeared in 27-or-more games in each of his six complete seasons with New England, and set new personal bests in 2018 with 11 goals scored across 32 games played, including 30 starts. Bunbury matched those 32 appearances in the 2019 campaign, tallying another six goals to help the Revolution return to the MLS Cup Playoffs.


Bunbury, 30, began his MLS career in 2010 as the fourth-overall selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by Kansas City. The Prior Lake, Minn. product became an immediate contributor at the professional level, totaling 89 appearances, 19 goals, and seven assists for Kansas City from 2010-13. In 2011, he tied for the team’s scoring lead with nine goals.


His professional journey followed a highly decorated two-year career at the University of Akron, where he scored 23 goals in 45 games under current Columbus Crew SC coach Caleb Porter. As a sophomore in 2009, he led the NCAA with 17 goals and won the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top college soccer player. Bunbury also garnered first-team All-American honors as he helped the Zips to a pair of MAC Tournament titles and two NCAA Tournament berths, including a trip to the 2009 College Cup Final.


On the international stage, Bunbury has been capped four times by the U.S. Men’s National Team after previously featuring for his native Canada at the Under-17 and Under-20 levels. He made his international debut in a friendly against South Africa on Nov. 11, 2010, and scored his first goal with the Stars and Stripes against Chile on Jan. 22, 2011. He also made two starts in January 2012 in wins against Venezuela and Panama, recording a game-winning assist in the latter.


After winning the opening match against the Montreal Impact, 1-0, the Revolution will resume play in Group C of the MLS is Back Tournamenton Friday, July 17 against D.C. United (ESPN / ESPN Deportes / 98.5 The Sports Hub). The team’s final match in the group stage will come against Toronto FC on Tuesday, July 21 at 9:00 a.m. ET (ESPN / ESPN Deportes / 98.5 The Sports Hub HD2).
