CARSON, Calif. – The New England Revolution (4-8-4, 16 pts.) defeated the LA Galaxy (9-6-1, 28 pts.), 2-1, at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday evening. Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena made his Revolution debut on the sidelines against his former club in tonight’s win after being appointed to the position on May 14. Arena was joined on the bench by newly appointed technical director, Curt Onalfo.

The game’s opening goal came on a strike from Revolution midfielder Cristian Penilla, whose 45^th-minute tally off of an assist from Carles Gil gave the visitors the lead just before the halftime whistle. In the 60^th minute, Gil notched his second assist of the night by setting up Teal Bunbury’s first goal of the 2019 season. In the 84^th minute, Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimović added a spectacular bicycle kick goal to pull one back for the hosts, but New England held on to secure the first three points of Arena’s head coaching tenure and the club’s first away win of the season.

Gil captained the team in tonight’s victory and catalyzed the club’s attack, raising his team-high assists total to four on the year to go with his four goals. Goalkeeper Brad Knighton earned the start in net, playing 90 minutes and making one save in the road win, while defender Andrew Farrell’s team-high 10 clearances kept the Galaxy’s chances to a minimum.

New England returns to action on Tuesday, June 11 when it opens play in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a Fourth Round away match against the New York Red Bulls at MSU Soccer Park on the campus of Montclair State University. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be available live on ESPN+.

• New England's all-time record against the LA Galaxy moves to 17-19-7, including a 6-12-4 mark in regular season away matches against the Galaxy.

Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena Makes Revolution Debut

• Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena made his debut on the sidelines in tonight’s win after he was appointed to the position on May 14. The win marked Arena’s 203^rd win in the regular season, second most all-time, and his overall record improves to 203-121-89.
• Arena, 67, previously spent nine years as head coach and general manager with the Galaxy from 2008-16, leading the club to three MLS Cup titles in a four-year span. 

Technical Director Curt Onalfo Joins Revolution on Sunday

• Announced shortly before tonight’s match, 20-year coaching veteran and former Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo was appointed as the Revolution’s technical director. He joined Arena on the sidelines in Carson on Sunday.
• Onalfo’s extensive resume includes multiple stints working alongside Arena, first as a player at the University of Virginia and later as an assistant with the LA Galaxy the U.S. Men’s National Team. He has also served as head coach of three different MLS clubs: the Kansas City Wizards (2007-09), D.C. United (2010), and the Galaxy (2017).

Carles Gil Tallies Two Assists, Six Key Passes

• Midfielder Carles Gil captained the Revolution and sparked the attack on numerous occasions, finishing the night with six key passes, two assists, and four fouls won in 90 minutes of action.
• Gil’s six chances created on the night are tied for the ninth most in a single match this MLS season, per Opta. He is one of only three players to have done so at least twice this season, along with LAFC’s Carlos Vela (twice) and Portland’s Diego Valeri (three times).
• Gil’s four assists are good for the team lead through 16 matches, while his four goals also pace the Revolution.

Cristian Penilla Scores Third Goal of 2019 Campaign

• Shortly before halftime, Ecuadorian midfielder Cristian Penilla netted his third goal of the season past Galaxy goalkeeper David Bingham to put the Revolution up 1-0 at the break.
• The goal marked Penilla’s third of the campaign and his 15^th tally in 46 MLS appearances.

Teal Bunbury Opens 2019 Account

• In the 60^th minute, forward Teal Bunbury scored his first goal of the 2019 season off of an assist from midfielder Carles Gil. Bunbury totaled five shots and two on target in his 90-minute outing.
• The goal was the 49^th of Bunbury’s regular season career, to go with 26 assists, bringing him one closer to the 50-goal threshold. The tally was the 29^th of his Revolution career, tying him with Kelyn Rowe for the ninth most in club history. 

Andrew Farrell Makes 200^th Career League Start

• Defender Andrew Farrell played 90 minutes in his 200^th career league start with the Revolution, becoming the fifth player in club history to reach the milestone.
• The Louisville, Kentucky native also made his 202^nd total appearance, surpassing Steve Ralston for sole possession of seventh-most games played in club history.
• Since entering the league in 2013, Farrell leads all MLS outfield players in games started (200) and minutes played (17,808).

Brad Knighton Tallies 42^nd Start in Revs Uniform

• Goalkeeper Brad Knighton made his 42^nd Revolution start in net, as well as his sixth appearance of the season (five starts), and made one save in the 2-1 win.
• The North Carolina native now has 69 career MLS starts and has recorded 229 career saves in his 12-year MLS stint, compiling a 27-25-17 record.

Revolution Starting XI Sees Two Changes

• The Revolution's starting lineup saw two changes from last weekend's match against D.C. United, as Brad Knighton replaced Matt Turner, and Diego Fagundez replaced Tajon Buchanan.
• Turner was suspended from tonight’s match after receiving a red card against D.C. United last week.
