FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution will finish off a three-game homestand on Saturday night when the LA Galaxy come to town, and they’ll do so in front of what is expected to be the largest crowd of the season to date.
With an expected attendance of more than 30,000 this will be the largest turnout to Gillette Stadium since last year’s home finale against New York City FC, when 33,767 fans came to Foxborough. The players are eager to have a packed house on Saturday, and hope to put on a show for their supporters as they aim to extend their unbeaten run to eight games.
“It’s a huge boost. You can look around, you can just feel it,” described team-leading goal scorer Teal Bunbury. “You can ask all players, they can sense it when we’re out on the field.
“Each play, each pass, they’re cheering us on and they’re kind of giving you this added motivation that usually might not be there. I think having a huge crowd like that is always exciting to play in front of.”
Not only will the atmosphere inside the building provide a jolt of energy, but it also sets up to be a very entertaining match based on recent history.
There have been a remarkable 32 combined goals scored in the past six regular-season meetings between the Revs (17) and Galaxy (15) dating back to 2012. With an average of 5.33 goals per game in those contests, Saturday’s matchup could be another action packed 90-minutes.
“We’re looking forward to putting on a good show for those fans and keeping them coming back not just for one game, but for many more,” said goalkeeper Matt Turner.
As the Revs wrap up this stretch at home, Saturday’s match marks the first of three games that the team will play in only eight days. With that in mind, the packed stands at Gillette Stadium could provide the Revs with an extra spark.
“The fans have been excellent all year, and especially the last few games and now this one,” said Scott Caldwell. “We love playing in front of them and they always help us, give us a little bit of a boost and we’ll count on that again this week.”
After Saturday’s match against the Galaxy the Revs will head out on a two-game road trip as they’ll visit Minnesota United FC and the New York Red Bulls in a four-day span next week.
