FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Eliot Jones '03 and Morris Mathews '03 have been called in to the U.S. Under-14 Boys’ National Team for a domestic training camp in Chula Vista, Calif. Jones and Matthews are two of 48 players in the camp and have each previously played for the U.S. Under-14 Boys' National Team.
“This camp is a chance to bring in a bunch of guys together to see where they are for the next cycle,” U.S. Under-14 Boys' National Team Head Coach Clint Peay said. “The main goal of the camp is to use it as another evaluation to see where they are after a year. We’ll get the chance to see how they’ve progressed and it gives coach Shaun Tsakiris, who will take them at the U-16 level, an opportunity to come in and see a big pool of guys all in one place.”
Jones, 13, is in the midst of his second season with the Revolution Academy. Overall, he has made a combined 30 appearances, including 25 starts, as a Revolution Academy player. The goalkeeper has posted a shutout in each of his last two matches. The New Britain, Mass. native will be making his third appearance with the U.S. Youth National Team since joining the Revolution Academy.
Matthews, 13, has made a combined 36 appearances, including 34 starts, with the Revolution Academy in two seasons. The defender has played up an age group recently, as his last three appearances have been at the U-17 level. The Cambridge, Mass. native will also be making his third appearance with the U.S. Youth National Team since joining the Revolution Academy.
During the camp, the U-14 BNT (birth year 2003) will play a total of five games, including one intra-squad match, against U.S. Soccer Development Academy clubs San Diego Surf (a mix of birth year 2001-2003) and Albion SC U-17 (birth year 2001), and two matches against Club Tijuana, who will field a combination of U-16s (birth year 2002) and U-15s (birth year 2003).
The camp marks the fifth and final U-14 Boys’ National Team programming of 2017 and the last of the 2016-2017 cycle, which began in November 2016. Beginning in 2018, the 2003 birth year players will move up to the U-16 Boy’s National Team for the 2018-2019 player cycle.
