FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution announced today that the club has acquired Gershon Koffie on loan from Sweden’s Hammarby IF. The midfielder is set to join the Revolution for the remainder of the 2017 MLS season and will be added to the Revolution roster upon the receipt of his P-1 Visa.
“Gershon had success with us last season and we feel fortunate we were able to reacquire him,” said Revolution General Manger Michael Burns. “We look forward to having him back for the remainder of 2017 and expect he’ll be able to come in and make an immediate impact.”
Koffie, 25, has made a combined 186 appearances across all competitions in his senior career, registering 11 goals with 10 assists since 2010. His previous experience includes one season with Hammarby IF (2017) in Sweden’s top-flight Allsvenksan, as well as one season with the New England Revolution (2016) and five seasons with Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2011-15) in Major League Soccer. The Ghanaian midfielder initially joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2010) when they were an NASL club. He also spent time with International Allies F.C. of the Ghana Premier League (2006-09)
Through the first month of the 2017 season, Koffie made three appearances across all competitions for Hammarby, starting two games as a defensive midfielder.
Last season, with the New England Revolution, Koffie made 22 appearances, with 19 starts, and contributed a career-high four assists. The midfielder was named to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week twice for his performances.
A native of Accra, Ghana, Koffie has international experience at the youth level. He joined the Ghana Under-20 National Team in July 2010 for a training camp. In addition he was named to the U-20 team’s 26-player squad for the 2011 African Youth Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa.
