Jack Hilger - Youth Update

FRISCO, Texas – Both the New England Revolution Under-18s and Under-16s were in action on Tuesday. The U16s played their first game of the 2011-12 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs against Albertson SC, coming away with a 2-2 draw. The U18s battled Chivas USA in their second game of the Playoffs, suffering a 4-3 loss to their second MLS opponent of the tournament.

UNDER-16s

The U16s played Albertson SC to a 2-2 draw in their first game of the Development Academy Playoffs. Jeff Banastey put Albertson ahead in the 16th minute, latching onto a long throw-in and turning to shoot from instead the six-yard box. The Revs then equalized early in the second half, Erik Martel (Bedford, N.H.) winning the ball on the right wing, before serving a cross in for Matthew Nyeayea (Worcester, Mass.) to slide home. New England’s go-ahead goal came in the 76th minute. Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) navigated through the midfield, beating several defenders and rounding the goalkeeper to get a low shot off. As the ball rolled toward the goal line, Albertson’s Andew Tinari attempted to clear, instead sending it into the upper corner of the goal. As the 80th minute passed, the Revs looked as though they would come away with a victory. However, New England was whistled for a handball in the box in the fifth minute of stoppage time, and Albertson’s Brett Nason converted the penalty kick to level the game at 2-2.

UNDER-18s

In their second game of the Development Academy Playoffs, the U18s suffered a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Chivas USA. The Goats were up three goals within the first 29 minutes of play, but New England continued to battle, pulling one back in the 39th minute. The build-up began with a free kick at the edge of the Revs’ attacking third, and ended with Jack Hilger (Hopkinton, Mass.) – assisted by Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) – scoring his first goal of the postseason. As the heat began to take its toll, New England made a series of subs, bringing on fresh legs and a renewed sense of urgency. Ngatcha then made it 3-2 in the 77th minute, and the Revs ran the ball back to the center circle in search of an equalizer. Chivas’ Julia Chavez then scored his second goal of the game in the 87th minute to double the Goats’ advantage. Undeterred, the Revs continued to fight, drawing a penalty kick in the 90th minute. Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) converted to make it 4-3, but the final whistle came soon after.

On Wednesday, the Under-16s will take on Pateadores in their second game of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Under-18s will play their third and final game on Thursday, taking on Charlotte Soccer Academy at 12 p.m. ET.
