FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The most magical match of a magical run to the 2014 MLS Cup final came on a late November night in Foxborough, where Charlie Davies cemented his place in New England Revolution history.
Jermaine Jones’ arrival midway through the 2014 campaign sparked the Revs on a 9-1-1 run through the end of the regular season and had them steamrolling towards an Eastern Conference crown, highlighted by a 2-1 win in the first leg of the conference championship at Red Bull Arena (No. 5 on this list).
New England needed just a draw in the second leg at Gillette Stadium to seal their first conference title since 2007, and it took a bit of drama to get there. Twice the visiting Red Bulls scored to pull level on aggregate, but Davies answered on both occasions.
He bundled home his first late in the first half, pushing Chris Tierney’s in-swinging cross over the line, and Davies’ second of the night – a beautiful header from another Tierney cross – was enough to draw the game 2-2 and win the series on aggregate, 4-3.
The decisive goal was made all the more special because the three players involved in the play – Davies (Manchester, N.H.), Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.), and Scott Caldwell (Braintree, Mass.) – were all native New Englanders.
