FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder and MLS MVP candidate Lee Nguyen won MLS Etihad Airways Player of the Month honors for October through fan voting. He claimed 47.08 percent of the vote to best Seattle’s Obafemi Martins, the runner-up with 44.66 percent of votes cast.
In helping the Revs go 3-0-1 and claim second place in the Eastern Conference, Nguyen scored a league-best five goals in four games in October, including two game-winning goals and one game-tying goal.
This is Nguyen’s first-ever MLS player of the month nod, and the Revolution’s first since 2005 – a span of 10 seasons – when Clint Dempsey won in April and Taylor Twellman won in September.
Nguyen (#MVLee) has emerged as one of the leading candidates for MLS MVP this season, scoring 18 goals and adding five assists for the Revs, who equaled a club record with 17 wins this season. His 18 goals on the year were the fourth most in MLS this season and the most ever by a pure midfielder in the league. He also led MLS with nine game-winning goals, the second-highest single-season total in league history.
The Revs went 14-1-2 when he scored a goal or added an assist this season, and during the last 14 games of the campaign – when the Revs rose from seventh to second in the Eastern Conference standings – Nguyen scored 12 goals and added four assists.
This was the second consecutive month that Nguyen was nominated for the league’s player of the month award.
The Revolution are set to enter the MLS Cup Playoffs as the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed when the postseason begins this weekend. The Revolution will play the third-seeded Columbus Crew on the road on Saturday, November 1 in the first leg of their two-leg, aggregate-goal Eastern Conference Semifinals series.
