Revolution Headlines: February 29

Headline News - Teal Bunbury

Preseason is officially over. MLS season is upon us and the Revolution open their season Sunday at Houston.

2015 closed with an early departure from the playoffs, so what can we expect from the 2016 Revs? SBI Soccer takes a look at new player acquisitions and old faces (hello Lee Nguyen), who will be impact players this year following some uhhhhhh departures. It’s important to note the Revolution are returning the majority of their squad, which is just how Jay Heaps likes it.

Charlie Davies had a breakout year in 2015 with the Revs. He led the team with 10 goals he took home the prestigious Golden Boot Award at the end of the season. According to Davies that was just the tip of the iceberg, “for me personally, this has been the best preseason of my whole career,” Davies told the Boston Herald. “I’ve come in very fit and I’ve continued to progress getting faster and stronger and more clinical, so I’m really excited to take the next step up.” I’m calling a Davies goal in the season opener on Sunday now…

The Revolution ended their preseason by winning the Desert Diamond Cup championship, and Teal Bunbury took home the MVP award. Bunbury is certainly making a case for playing time in 2016, displaying his value both on the wing and in the center. Jay Heaps told media about Bunbury, “His versatility I like right now.”

There is a wealth of talent for Jay Heaps to utilize from his squad. That serves as a motivator for Kelyn Rowe, who knows all too well that no one is guaranteed playing time. Rowe was in and out of the lineup in 2015, but has learned valuable lessons from that experience. “I think there was a lot more competition last year and you saw it going in good spells and bad spells. I was in and out of the lineup. Personally, for me, it was about consistency,” Rowe said of last season. In 2016 Rowe is focused on maintaining consistency, something the entire squad is striving for.

More headlines to come as we inch closer to the season opener.
