New England Revolution begin 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in Third Round vs. Hartford Athletic

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (April 6, 2023) – The New England Revolution will host Hartford Athletic in the Third Round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match will take place on either Tuesday, April 25 or Wednesday, April 26 at Gillette Stadium. 

The match date and kickoff time will be announced on Friday, April 7. Tickets for the Third Round match at Gillette Stadium are expected to go on sale Tuesday, April 11 on Revolutionsoccer.net, or via Account Manager for existing season members. 

New England and Hartford Athletic will meet for the first time in a competitive fixture, having played previously in a pair of preseason friendlies. Hartford progressed to the third round after defeating local qualifier Lansdowne Yonkers FC, 3-0, at home in the second round. Striker Elvis Amoh netted a hat trick and is currently the competition’s joint top scorer this year. Hartford Athletic, which began play in 2019, competes in the USL Championship, the second division of the U.S. professional soccer pyramid. Currently, Hartford (0-2-2, 2pts.) sits 10th in the USL Championship Eastern Conference standings.

The New England Revolution are three-time finalists and one-time winners of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, having lifted the trophy in 2007. New England also reached the final in 2001 and 2016. Last season, the Revolution reached the Round of 16 in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup, falling to New York City FC, 1-0, after extra time. Overall, the Revolution are 22-18-5 in 45 games in the competition, including a 16-5-3 mark at home.

Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament. The winner of the U.S. Open Cup receives a bid to the 2024 Concacaf Champions League, an annual tournament between the top clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Concacaf Champions League’s winner is awarded a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Revolution continue the MLS regular season this Saturday, April 8, hosting CF Montreal for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium.
