Revolution Academy Highlights: December 9, 2022

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution Academy’s U-15, U-17, and U-19 teams closed out the MLS NEXT fall season at MLS NEXT Fest in Indio, Calif., where they competed alongside 300 of the top youth teams across the United States and Canada from December 2-8.

The U-19s were unbeaten at the tournament, beginning their run with a 1-1 draw vs. Phoenix Rising FC. Malik Akin (2006 – Altamonte Springs, Fla.) scored in the 78th minute to secure the result for his team. Gianluca Armellino (2005 – Plainville, Mass.) notched a brace as Tyler Flowers (2005 – Sharon, Mass.) scored with a rocket from 25 yards out in the U-19s’ 3-2 victory over the Michigan Wolves.

The team closed out MLS NEXT Fest with a 4-0 win over Sacramento United where Armellino, Alexander St. John (2005 – Needham, Mass.), Jason Zacarias (2004 – Billerica, Mass.), and Jack Burkhardt (2005 – Sutton, Mass.) all scored as Max Weinstein (2004 – Montpelier, V.T.) earned the clean sheet.

The U-17s went 2-1-0 in their three matches played in California. Tito Nichols (2007 – Milton, Mass.) scored in the opening match, a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Fire. The team went on to win their final two matches as Olger Escobar (2006 – Lynn, Mass.) netted his first goal of the tournament in his team’s 2-0 win vs. the Vancouver Whitecaps with a scissor kick in the 29th minute while Eric Martinez (2006 – Perris, Calif.) secured the victory with his goal in the 88th minute. Owen Beninga (2007 – Jackson, W.Y.) and Ryan Carney (2005 – Dunstable, Mass.) both saw time in net to seal the shutout.

The U-17s ended their MLS NEXT Fest run with a 4-2 win over the Houston Dynamo. Escobar opened the scoring for New England as Martinez notched a brace with Raphael Alves (2007 – Framingham, Mass.) scoring in the 86th minute to close it out.

The U-15s bring home a 2-1-0 record from MLS NEXT Fest. The team started strong with a 1-0 win over FC Dallas as Cristiano Carlos (2008 – Chicopee, Mass.) scored in the first minute to secure the game-winner as Jose Goodman Millman earned the shutout.

Carlos notched his second of the tournament in the fifth minute of the U-15s next game vs. FC Cincinnati. Hector Orozco (2008 – Arp, Texas) and Mesud Ramic (2008 – Weare, N.H.) followed up with goals of their own, securing the 3-2 victory for their team. The U-15s fell 2-1 in their last game of the tournament to Los Angeles Football Club where Cristiano Oliveira (2008 – Somerville, Mass.) scored in the 73rd minute.
