Recap | Revs defeat LA Galaxy, 4-1, to claim first win of 2021 preseason

CARSON, Calif. – The New England Revolution topped the LA Galaxy, 4-1, in the club’s second preseason contest, as 22 different players each saw 45 minutes of action. Adam Buksa and Teal Bunbury provided the opening goals in the first half, while Tommy McNamara and Gustavo Bou tallied on the other side of halftime. In total, seven Revolution players found their way onto the scoresheet with a goal or an assist.

Buksa tallied New England’s opening goal in the sixth minute, as Bunbury intercepted an errant pass and fed it to the striker for a close-range finish. Bunbury doubled the Revs’ lead with a powerful header in the 23rd minute. The assist was delivered by Revolution II’s Connor Presley, making his second preseason appearance with the first team. LA cut the lead in half moments later with a goal in the 28th minute. 

On the other side of halftime, McNamara scored New England’s third in the 64th minute with a curling right-footed shot, assisted by Bou and DeJuan Jones. Bou then added the Revs’ fourth goal in the 67th minute, serviced by Carles Gil.

The Revolution will continue the 2021 preseason with friendlies against Los Angeles FC on April 3, LA Galaxy II on April 7, and a second meeting with LAFC on April 10. The final three preseason contests will not be streamed. After concluding the exhibition slate in California, the Revolution will return to Foxborough to prepare for the 2021 MLS regular season opener on Saturday, April 17 at Chicago Fire FC.

Match Notes:

  • Bruce Arena utilized 22 players for 45 minutes apiece in tonight’s contest. Seven of the 22 Revs players who appeared in the match recorded a goal or an assist, and Gustavo Bou and Teal Bunbury both finished the night with one of each.
  • Adam Buksa, who scored seven goals in the 2020 regular season and playoffs combined, scored his first goal of the preseason.
  • Revolution II players Colby Quiñones and Connor Presley both started the match at outside back, with Quiñones on the right and Presley appearing at left back for the second consecutive contest. Presley delivered the assist on Teal Bunbury’s goal in the first half.
  • The starting lineup featured four Revolution Academy alumni: first-team Homegrown Players Scott Caldwell, Damian Rivera, and Justin Rennicks, and Revolution II’s ColbyQuiñones.
