CURRENT FORM
New England Revolution
12th in Eastern Conference (2-4-1, 7 pts.)
Last Result | 1-0 win at Atlanta United FC
The Revolution secured their second win in three games last weekend at Atlanta, earning a crucial three points on the road. New England’s winning performance saw both goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič and captain Carles Gil named to the MLS Team of the Matchday. Gil remains the Revolution’s only goal scorer so far this season, after he drew a penalty and scored his third goal of the campaign in the 36th minute last weekend. Gil’s attacking consistency was balanced by the goalkeeping of Ivačič, who made five saves to shut out Atlanta.
The win in Atlanta was an important three points for the Revs, who, including Saturday’s match, have only two games at home until June. With so many games on the road, the clash with NYCFC will be an important opportunity to continue building momentum ahead of their upcoming travel.
New York City FC
10th in Eastern Conference (3-3-2, 11 pts.)
Last Result | 1-0 win vs. Philadelphia Union
NYCFC ended a three-game winless streak last weekend, as they took down the Philadelphia Union on their home turf for the first time since 2019. The 1-0 match saw multiple chances created for both sides, but it was attacker Alonso Martinez who converted for the Boys in Blue. The goal marked Martinez’s fifth of the season and 21st goal throughout his 36 MLS appearances.
NYCFC’s strong performance humbled the Union, who entered the match ranked third in the Eastern Conference. The loss dropped Philadelphia to fifth place and lifted NYCFC to 10th in the East standings. In their last meeting with New England this season, NYCFC came out on top in a 2-1 clash at Yankee Stadium.
KEY PLAYERS
Revolution forward Tomás Chancalay
In an emotional full-circle moment, Tomás Chancalay will make his return to Gillette Stadium for the first time in nearly a year, after suffering an ACL tear against NYCFC at home on May 25, 2024. While the Argentine attacker made his long-awaited return to action last weekend in Atlanta, this match marks his first appearance in front of Revolution fans since that season-ending injury – against the very same team.
Chancalay clocked 12 minutes of playing time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, even managing to get a shot off in that short window. Now fully reintegrated with the squad, he is looking for more minutes on the pitch in hopes of adding an additional threat to the Revolution attack. With a hunger and excitement to be back on the field, Chancalay could bring a newfound energy to New England’s top line.
NYCFC forward Alonso Martinez
Alonso Martinez is currently tied for third on the MLS scoring charts with five goals in seven games, accounting for nearly half of NYCFC’s 11 goals on the season. In last weekend’s match-up with the Philadelphia Union, Martinez was the lone goal scorer, utilizing his ability to run behind defensive lines and create a real attacking threat.
Earlier in the season, in NYCFC’s first meeting with the Revolution, Martinez found the net in the 68th minute to secure the lead. Containing him will be a top priority for the Revolution’s defense, as he has consistently proven himself a lethal finisher.
HEAR FROM THE TEAM
Head coach Caleb Porter on maximizing points at home during a road-heavy stretch in April and May:
“What’s good is we got our first road win and we have a lot of road games coming up. That is going to give us confidence, but we need to string together home wins. We won our last home game, we need to string together two in a row at home now and start to build that feeling and belief that we have a fortress and that nobody comes into our house and takes points off us. We need to have that mentality. If we win this game, that is three out of four, but we have to invest. The credit goes to the players in this last game, the credit is going to go to them if we win this next game. It is not about me.”
Forward Tomás Chancalay on playing in front of the home fans for the first time since returning from injury on Saturday:
“I want to see the fans here. The fans stayed with me all the time. They reached out to me, when I was coming to games to watch my teammates. I want to say, ‘I want to see you guys.’ I want to play here. I will try to score, and we’ll try to win a game here.”
Midfielder Carles Gil on optimism moving forward:
“It is a long season, so I think we need continue step-by-step. We had a bad start to the season, and like I said, we have two wins in the last three. So, we are improving and that's what we want. Like I said, this game is really important for us – a second win at home, if we can do it. It is a month and a half with many games away, so it is important to win the games we play at home and to create this atmosphere with our fans. That's what we want for Saturday.”
