CURRENT FORM
New England Revolution
4th in Eastern Conference (14-10-4, 46 pts.)
Last Result | 3-0 loss vs. Seattle Sounders FC
While the Revs remain near the top of the East, they’ve taken two consecutive 3-0 losses as they aim to get back to winning ways in Cincinnati. In their last outing, New England suffered just their third loss at Gillette Stadium this season to the Seattle Sounders. While they failed to claim three points, the Revs did outshoot the Sounders 12-9 and owned 55 percent of possession.
The Revolution have won four of their last six games on the road and have been historically successful at TQL Stadium. As visitors in Cincinnati, the Revs have gone 4-1-1. With just six games remaining in the regular season, New England are motivated to keep earning points as they aim to not only clinch a playoff berth, but also keep a top seed going into postseason.
FC Cincinnati
9th in Eastern Conference (9-9-9, 36 pts.)
Last Result | 3-1 win at Atlanta United FC
FC Cincinnati found their first win in seven games this past weekend against Atlanta United, snapping a six-game winless streak. Cincinnati have been a strong side at home this season, earning seven of their nine wins at TQL Stadium. FCC travelled to Gillette Stadium earlier this season, providing the Revs with their first win – an emphatic 6-1 victory.
While Cincinnati have been a strong attacking side with 58 goals scored, they’ve struggled on the defensive end. With 65 goals against, Cincinnati own the second-worst defensive record in the East. Sitting ninth in the East, Cincinnati will be motivated to solidify their place above the playoff line.
KEY PLAYERS
Revolution midfielder Carles Gil
Captain Carles Gil continues to lead the Revolution in more ways than one. The midfielder remains at the top of New England’s stats, owning the highest total goal contributions through both his team-leading goals (12) and assists (9). He hopes to become just the second MLS player to record double-digit assists in six consecutive seasons.
In his last appearance against FC Cincinnati, Gil registered three shots on target and completed two key passes. The Spaniard also leads MLS with 79 key passes this season, highlighting his influence on New England’s attack. As the Revolution look to claim all three points in Ohio, Gil’s performance could once again play a decisive role.
Cincinnati forward Kévin Denkey
Kévin Denkey has scored more than 27 percent of Cincinnati’s 58 goals this season. With 16 goals on his tally, the attacker leads Cincinnati and is the fifth-highest scoring player in MLS. While he failed to find the net against New England in their first meeting this season, he scored the match-winning goal against the Revs at Gillette Stadium last season.
Denkey is currently in peak form, scoring five goals and logging one assist across his last three appearances. While New England have been a solid team defensively this year, Denkey will pose a large attacking threat.
HEAR FROM THE REVS
Head coach Marko Mitrović on the challenges of playing FC Cincinnati on the road tomorrow:
“They are a team that, just purely watching MLS in the last four or five years, I think they are one of the best teams in the league. I read somewhere thats, the last few years they were actually the team that won most points during the regular seasons combined. Maybe this year they didn't have the results the way they wanted. But I think that over the last several years you can see the consistency of who they are. You can always have one good, or one better, or one not that good season, but it doesn't reflect really within your process. I really think that this team has a strong identity in the way they play.”
Mitrović on how the team's ability to overcome adversity has evolved since the beginning of the season:
“I don't think that our mindset is changed or will be changed. We really have the same approach, and that's something that I greatly appreciate from this group, that they come to work every day and understand that there are challenges ahead of us, and they are ready to face them. Throughout the whole season, you always go through ups and downs. It’s like on in one game, and in that game, everything goes on your side. But I believe in this group. I believe in our work. I believe in their mentality, approach, and where we are right now.”
Goalkeeper Matt Turner on the importance of the team’s mindset at this point in the season:
“It’s extremely important and we are going to need every single player in our squad to be pulling the same direction if we want to ultimately get to where we want to go. Words are words, and the way we speak is very important, but the actions are even more important. We have to get out there and we have to compete. This is the time of year where the first tackle, every second ball, every little mistake is maximized or scrutinized the most.”
