FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution have signed midfielder Emmanuel Boateng(pronounced BOA-tang) as a free agent. Boateng joins New England for his ninth professional season and sixth MLS campaign after stints with Columbus Crew SC, D.C. United, and the LA Galaxy, in addition to three years in Sweden’s first-tier Allsvenskan with Helsingborgs IF.
“Ema Boateng is an experienced left-footed attacking player with very good pace. He is comfortable playing on the flanks, which is an area where he can help improve our team.” Revolution Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena said. “Ema’s character and professionalism will be welcomed additions to our team, and we look forward to his arrival in Foxborough.”
Across five MLS seasons, Boateng has totaled 121 appearances with 68 starts, tallying nine goals and 14 assists. The Accra, Ghana native was with the LA Galaxy from 2016-19, where he made 108 regular season appearances and played under both Bruce Arena and Revolution Technical Director Curt Onalfo. The five-foot-seven winger played in three games with D.C. United in 2019 before joining Columbus via trade later that season. Boateng played in 10 league games with Crew SC in 2020, with two additional postseason appearances en route to winning the 2020 MLS Cup.
Before joining MLS, Boateng began his professional career in Sweden’s top division with Helsingborgs IF from 2013-15. He made 37 Allsvenskan appearances during his tenure, scoring four times in the league, and also contributed three goals and two assists in Svenska Cupen action.
The soon-to-be 27-year-old played one season of collegiate soccer at the University of California, Santa Barbara, earning Big West Freshmen of the Year and First-Team All-Big West honors in 2012. A graduate of Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy, Boateng attended the Cate School in California, where he was recognized as the nation’s top high school player as 2012 Gatorade Player of the Year.
