For the sixth time this season, Carles Gil has been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi. The Revolution talisman earned a starting spot amongst the best XI of Matchday 21, following his heroic effort to resurrect the Revolution in a historic 3-3 draw for the club.
Trailing the Colorado Rapids 3-0 by the 55th minute this past Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, New England made a major comeback to secure a point against the Western Conference side. While it could have been easy to accept defeat, the Revolution bounced back under the charge of captain Carles Gil, who played a part in all three Revolution goals. It was the first time in club history that New England erased a three-goal deficit to find a point.
The comeback began with Gil, who in the 58th minute created a turnover in the attacking third before sending a dangerous ball into the box, ultimately forcing an own goal from Rapids defender Sam Vines. It was the boost of energy the Revs needed to change their fate.
According to Gil, he never doubted the comeback – proof that his leadership stems not only from his talent on the pitch, but also from his unwavering belief in his team.
“I was believing until the end, even in the more difficult moment when we conceded a third, because I felt that in the first 20 minutes, we were the better team,” he said following Saturday’s match.
That relentless drive helped Gil and the Revolution carve out a real chance to equalize. In the 86th minute, it was none other than Gil who drew a foul in Colorado’s box, earning a penalty kick with less than five minutes remaining in normal time. Of course, Gil – one of the league’s top penalty scorers in 2025 – stepped up and buried it. Gillette Stadium erupted, with belief in the draw pulsing through everyone in the building.
It was Gil who paved the way for New England to be in game-tying territory, but he didn’t stop there. In stoppage time and desperate for the equalizer, Gil launched a ball from near midfield to Tanner Beason, who beat a defender and lofted a cross into the box. Off the head of Maxi Urruti, New England found the goal they’d been searching for and made it a 3-3 match.
“It’s an unbelievable accomplishment to be able to [lead the team in a three-goal comeback], and it just shows how resilient you are,” head coach Caleb Porter said of Gil’s performance.
Gil continues to lead the Revolution with 13 goal contributions this season. With seven goals and six assists through 18 games, Gil has already scored as many goals in 2025 as he did in 26 appearances last year. As the league agrees, placing him on Team of the Matchday now six times, Gil is well on his way to one of his best seasons yet.
