Sean Hughes is entering his first season as an Assistant Coach with the New England Revolution, appointed to the position on December 4, 2025. Hughes, who spent 14 seasons coaching at the collegiate level, reunites with Marko Mitrović after serving as an assistant coach on his staff with the United States U-20 National Team before and during the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Since 2024, Hughes had been the associate head coach of the University of Michigan men’s soccer team. With the Wolverines, Hughes helped Michigan earn back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in 2024 and 2025. Michigan also advanced to the Big Ten Tournament Final in 2024 and 2025, ending a five-year drought. In 2024, he helped Michigan notch a win in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 12 years.
During his time in Ann Arbor, Hughes also joined Mitrović’ and the U.S. Under-20 national team coaching staff for multiple preparatory camps leading up to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In Chile, he helped the Stars and Stripes reach the Quarterfinals, posting impressive victories over France and Italy, both by 3-0 scorelines.
After one year as the head coach of the Maryville University men’s soccer team in 2015, where his team set a single-season Division II record for wins and recorded the most shutouts in program history, Hughes accepted a position as an assistant coach with Marquette University at the Division I level. Hughes spent eight seasons with Marquette, the last four as associate head coach, where he also led the program’s recruiting efforts. He helped the Golden Eagles reach three Big East Tournaments, an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, and win the Big East Midwest Championship in 2021.
Hughes, a native of Blackburn, England, entered the coaching ranks in 2012 with Quincy University in NCAA Division II, where he helped compile a 48-9-8 record, win two Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, and reach the NCAA semifinals as the No. 3-ranked team nationally in 2014. In his first season with the team, the Hawks sported a 12-2-6 record earning an NCAA Tournament berth. Hughes followed that up with a 15-5-0 record in 2013 and a share of the regular season Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title. In his final season, Hughes guided the program to the NCAA Division II national semifinal in 2014 when the Hawks finished with a 21-2-2 record. During his time at Quincy, Hughes coached four All-Americans, two GLVC Freshmen of the Year, two GLVC Defensive Players of the Year, one GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, and more than 20 all-conference players
As a player, Hughes played collegiately at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma from 2006-08, where he was the joint leading scorer both years. He then transferred to Cardinal Stritch University, where he earned a degree in sports management. He later completed his MBA while working at Quincy University in 2014. Professionally, Hughes played the 2011 season for Whitsunday Miners FC in the Australian Soccer League second division, helping the team record its highest-ever finish in the league standings. The next season, Hughes played for Crewesadors FC futsal team in the English National Futsal League North in 2012.
The England native enjoyed a standout career in his home country where he played for the youth teams for Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Preston North End and Bury FC. With the latter, he played in the 2003 FA Youth Cup, and represented the Great Britain Catholic Schoolboys U-16 squad in Spain. A USSF A License holder, He and his wife, Danielle, have two children, George and Grace.
