Recap: Road woes continue as Revolution suffer 3-0 loss to Philadelphia Union

CHESTER, Pa. – The New England Revolution (5-8-5; 20 pts.) fell to the Philadelphia Union (6-7-4; 22 pts.), 3-0, at Talen Energy Stadium on Sunday evening.


After Revolution defender Benjamin Angoua was whistled for a handball in the box just minutes into the start of the match, Philadelphia forward C.J. Sapong converted from the penalty spot to put the home side in front in the fourth minute of the match. The Union also struck quickly at the start of the second half, as Fafa Picault played a cross to Ilsinho in the 18-yard box, where the latter found the back of the net to double the Union's lead. After coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute, Union midfielder Roland Alberg scored from distance to give the Union the club's third and final goal of the match.


In tonight's match, midfielder Lee Nguyen became the seventh player in club history to eclipse the 15,000-minute mark in the 12th minute of tonight's match. Nguyen finished the match with 15,078 minutes, surpassing Taylor Twellman (15,046) for sixth all-time in the club's history. In addition, forward Teal Bunbury made his 100th career MLS regular season appearance with the Revolution in tonight's contest. Also, forward Brian Wright made his first appearance in League play when he replaced Donnie Smith in the 52nd minute of the match.


New England returns to action on July 5, when it hosts the New York Red Bulls. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast locally on CSN New England, where Brad Feldman, Paul Mariner, and Naoko Funayama will be on the call.   • Forward Teal Bunbury made his 100th career MLS regular season appearance with the Revolution in tonight's contest. Bunbury has been a regular on the 18-man matchday roster since joining the club prior to the 2014 MLS season, having appeared in 100 of 120 regular season matches.
  • Bunbury becomes the 28th player in club history to eclipse 100 games played, joining teammates Chris Tierney (229), Lee Nguyen (177), Kelyn Rowe (173), Diego Fagundez (169), Andrew Farrell (145), and Scott Caldwell (137).


Bunbury, D. Smith Record First MLS Starts of 2017

  • Revolution forward Teal Bunbury and defender Donnie Smith made their first MLS starts of the season in tonight's match. Prior to tonight's match, Bunbury made 11 substitute appearances, while Smith had yet to record an appearance this season.
  • Bunbury, who joined the Revolution prior to the 2014 regular season, has made 100 appearances, including 68 starts, while scoring 10 goals and adding 13 assists with the club.
  • Smith, who was selected in the second round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, has made six appearances, including five starts, as a Revolution player. Smith recorded his first goal across all competitions earlier this year, when he found the back of the net in the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup vs. the Rochester Rhinos on June 14.


Wright Makes First MLS Appearance

  • Revolution forward Brian Wright made his first MLS appearance when he replaced defender Donnie Smith in the 53rd minute of the match.
  • Wright has seen time in the U.S. Open Cup for the Revs this year, starting in of the club's matches. The University of Vermont product scored the game-winning goal for New England on June 28 in their Round of 16 triumph over D.C. United, 2-1.


Revolution Make Five Changes to Starting XI

  • Revolution Head Coach Jay Heaps made five changes to the club’s starting lineup from its most recent match on June 23 vs. the Chicago Fire, with Donnie Smith, Josh Smith, Scott Caldwell, Teal Bunbury, and Kei Kamara replacing Antonio Delamea, London Woodberry, Diego Fagundez, Kelyn Rowe, and Juan Agudelo respectively.
  • Midfielder Kelyn Rowe and forward Juan Agudelo were unavailable for selection in tonight's match due to the duo being called up to the United States Men's National Team.
  • Midfielder Diego Fagundez was unavailable for selection in tonight's match after receiving a retroactive red card suspension for a foul committed at Toronto on June 23.
  • Goalkeeper Matt Turner was unavailable for selection in tonight's match as he is currently on loan with the Richmond Kickers.
