Revolution earn dominant 3-0 win over Orlando City SC

Diego Fagundez goal celebration vs. Orlando City SC

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution cruised to a 3-0 win over Orlando City SC on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. Diego Fagundez gave the Revs a 1-0 lead late in the first half before Juan Agudelo and Chris Tierney added late goals as the Revs extended their league-best unbeaten streak to six games, including wins in their last four. Lee Nguyen assisted on all three Revolution goals, setting a new club record for assists in a game while Bobby Shuttleworth kept his third consecutive clean sheet for New England, who moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Revolution took control in the opening stages, with Charlie Davies twice going close and Fagundez hitting the crossbar – all before the 25th minute. Tierney created numerous opportunities with his delivery from the left flank, but it was his long ball from the back that led to the Revs’ first goal. His pass down the wing found Davies, who chested the ball down to Nguyen just outside the area. Nguyen hit a first-time pass into the path of a streaking Fagundez, who took a touch and volleyed past Tally Hall in the Orlando City goal to make the score 1-0.

The lead was almost doubled just before the halftime whistle, with Nguyen again setting up Fagundez for a strike just inside the area, but Hall got down to his right and pushed the ball away, while Nguyen chipped the rebound just wide.

Despite the Revs continuing to threaten the Orlando City goal, the score would stay 1-0 until the 84th minute before Agudelo put the game out of reach. Nguyen was at the center of a flowing move, sliding a pass out to substitute Teal Bunbury in space behind the Orlando defense on the right. Bunbury’s low cross found Agudelo, who tapped the ball into an open net, doubling the Revolution lead to 2-0 with his sixth goal of the season.

New England made the score 3-0 in the game’s final seconds with Tierney scoring his first goal since April 25. Fagundez found Nguyen inside the area and he back-heeled a pass in to the path of Tierney, who slipped a low shot past Hall to make the score 3-0 in favor of the home side.

Additional Game Notes

  • With the win, the Revolution are now 11-9-7 for 40 points on the season. They are now alone in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Columbus Crew SC, who play away to FC Dallas on Sunday night and three points ahead of Toronto FC, who are in action tonight at Seattle.
  • The Revs are now unbeaten in their last six games, going 5-0-1 since July 18 when they beat New York City FC 1-0 at Gillette Stadium. The Revs’ six-game unbeaten streak is the longest active streak in MLS and three games shy of their nine-game unbeaten streak from earlier this year, which is the longest in the league this season.
  • This is the Revs’ first four game winning streak of the season. New England’s longest winning-streak all-time is six games, with that being set in 2005.
  • New England has taken 16 of a possible 18 points from its last six games.
  • This is the 10th time in 20 seasons of MLS that the Revs have reached the 40 point plateau. They have never missed the postseason when registering 40 points or more.
  • Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made one change to the team that beat Philadelphia 1-0 last weekend at PPL Park. Daigo Kobayashi returned to the starting lineup, replacing Jermaine Jones, who is on international duty with the U.S. National Team.
  • With Kobayashi returning to the starting lineup, Andy Dorman returned to the 18-man squad, taking a spot on the bench.
  • Kobayashi, who was starting his 10th game of the season, made the 50th appearance of his Revolution career in the game.
  • Diego Fagundez gave the Revs a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute with his fourth goal of the season and his second in as many games.
  • This is the second time this season that Fagundez has scored in consecutive appearances, having also scored on May 31 against the LA Galaxy and on June 13 against Chicago, though he did not play on June 6 in the Revs’ 2-0 loss away to Portland.
  • Lee Nguyen and Charlie Davies were each credited with assists on the goal.
  • Davies is now one assist shy of matching his MLS career-high from a season ago, with two of his three assists this year setting up Fagundez goals.
  • The Revs have now scored first in all five games of their current five-game unbeaten streak.
  • Juan Agudelo doubled New England’s lead in the 84th minute with his sixth goal of the year.
  • Agudelo now has five goals on the season and he has scored in each of the last two home games. Both of those goals have come in appearances as a substitute.
  • He is now one goal shy of matching his total with the Revs in 2013. That year he had a career-high nine goals with two coming as a member of Chivas USA.
  • Teal Bunbury and Nguyen were each credited with assists on the goal.
  • Nguyen has assisted on each of Agudelo’s last two goals.
  • Chris Tierney rounded out the scoring with his second goal of the season in second-half stoppage time.
  • His two goals this season have come in the Revs’ two biggest wins of the season, a 4-0 home win over Real Salt Lake on April 25 and tonight’s 3-0 win over Orlando City.
  • Nguyen, who finished the game with three assists, and Fagundez were each credited with assists on the goal.
  • Nguyen’s three assists set a new club record for assists in a game and he is the first Revolution player to record multiple assists in a game this season.
  • He now has three goals and five assists in his last six games.
  • Fagundez now has four assists, equaling his total from a year ago.
  • Three of his four goals and assists have come at home with the others each coming at PPL Park against the Philadelphia Union.
  • New England goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth made four saves for his eighth clean sheet of the season and third in as many games. He is now one shutout away from tying his single season career-high and two from tying the single season club record.
  • Shuttleworth’s three straight shutouts are his longest streak of clean sheets since May 18, 2013-June 8, 2013 when he kept four straight shutouts.
  • This is the first time since that run that the Revs have kept three straight clean sheets in all competitions.
  • Jose Goncalves, who wore the captain’s armband in place of Jermaine Jones, was not shown a yellow card. This was his third straight game without being booked, meaning that he has had one card removed from his record and he is no longer one caution away from a mandatory one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation.
  • Juan Agudelo and Bobby Shuttleworth each played their 99th career regular-season game. All 99 of Shuttleworth’s appearances have come as a member of the Revolution, leaving him one game shy of becoming the second goalkeeper in Revolution history to appear in 100 games for the club.
  • Tierney started his 164th game for the club, passing Taylor Twellman for the fifth most in club history.
