Revolution claim 2-0 win over Houston Dynamo at Gillette Stadium

Jose Goncalves Goal Celebration

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution earned a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium despite two weather delays that totaled two hours and 50 minutes. Second half goals from Jose Goncalves and Juan Agudelo gave the Revs their third straight home win and extended their unbeaten streak to four games, going 3-0-1 in that time.

In the 13th minute, referee Jose Carlos Rivero suspended play due to lightning in the Foxborough area. The game resumed at 9:40 p.m. ET after a one hour and 49 minute delay.

Shortly after play resumed, Lee Nguyen and Diego Fagundez each had chances to put the Revs in front, but were denied by Houston’s Tyler Deric on each occasion.

After the scoreless first half, a string of thunderstorms approaching the stadium forced match officials to delay the start of the second half by one hour and one minute.

After the teams finally took the field, the Revolution controlled the play with Kelyn Rowe seeing a long distance effort palmed off the crossbar by Deric, who made a save on Nguyen 15 minutes later to keep the game scoreless. The Revs eventually took the lead in the 69th minute through Goncalves, who scored his first goal of the season. The goal came as a result of a short corner combination with Nguyen and halftime substitute Daigo Kobayashi, before Nguyen sent a cross into the box that was headed high into the air by Houston defender A.J. Cochrane. The ball fell to Goncalves, who hit a first-time volley past Deric to put the Revs 1-0 up.

The score would remain the same until the 88th minute, when Agudelo put the game out of reach with his fifth goal of the season. Fagundez sparked a counterattack by poking the ball forward to Nguyen, who raced forward, eluding the sliding challenge of David Horst before palying a square ball across the face of goal to Agudelo, who struck a low shot past Deric to make the final score 2-0 in favor of New England.

Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth made two saves on his way to recording his sixth shutout of the season and his first since June 13. The Revs will be off again next weekend before returning to action on Saturday, Aug. 29 when they face the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park to close out the month.
