FINAL: Revolution 1, D.C. United 1

Jose Goncalves vs. D.C. United

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution fought to a 1-1 draw with D.C. United on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium in a game that saw the Revs play more than the final half hour with just nine men. Charlie Davies staked New England to a 1-0 lead in first-half stoppage time before Chris Tierney and Lee Nguyen were shown red cards six minutes apart early in the second half, forcing New England to play down two men for the final 32 minutes. With the draw, the Revolution are now 5-3-5 for 20 points on the season and remain in second place in the Eastern Conference, two points behind United.

Davies put the Revolution out in front just before the halftime whistle, scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the season. A Chris Tierney corner kick found the head of Juan Agudelo, who saw his headed shot blocked by goalkeeper Bill Hamid, however the rebound fell cleanly to Davies, who prodded the ball over the line from six yards out, giving the Revs a 1-0 lead going into the break.

The Revs were down to 10 men in the 52nd minute, when Chris Tierney was shown a straight red card for a foul on Chris Pontius. Six minutes later, referee Mark Geiger sent off Lee Nguyen for a second yellow card for a foul on Davy Arnaud, forcing the Revs to play the final 32 minutes with just nine men.

Despite the two-man disadvantage, the Revs almost doubled their lead in the 77th minute when Kelyn Rowe, who had just entered the game, collected bouncing ball 30 yards from goal, took one touch and unleashed a left-footed shot that had Hamid beaten but sailed over the bar.

D.C. United finally breached the Revolution defense in the 80th minute when Jairo Arrieta got on the end of a low Taylor Kemp cross and redirected a shot past Bobby Shuttleworth with United’s first shot on goal of the game, tying the score at 1-1 and earning a share of the points for the visitors.

Revolution Santander Man of the Match

ANDREW FARRELL– Shined in central defense, helping the Revs limit D.C. United to just one shot on goal despite playing with only nine men for the final 32 minutes.

  • Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made five changes to the team that lost 4-2 away to Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night at Sporting Park. Bobby Shuttleworth, Andrew Farrell, Chris Tierney, Teal Bunbury and Charlie Davies all returned to the lineup in place of Brad Knighton, Kevin Alston, Andy Dorman, Kelyn Rowe and Diego Fagundez. Of that group, all but Dorman began the game on the bench.
  • Dorman missed the game while serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. This was just the third game this season that Dorman did not appear in.

  • Charlie Davies gave the Revs a 1-0 lead in first-half stoppage time. This was the sixth straight game in which the Revs had taken a 1-0 advantage.

  • That was the first goal scored by New England in either first or second half stoppage time this season.
  • Chris Tierney was sent off in the 52nd minute for a foul on Chris Pontius.
  • That was the third red card of Tierney’s MLS career and his first since October 22, 2011 when he was sent off in second half stoppage time against Toronto FC.
  • Lee Nguyen was sent off six minutes later when he was shown a second yellow card by referee Mark Geiger, reducing the Revs to nine men. That was the first red card of his MLS career.
  • This was the fifth time in club history that the Revs have been reduced to nine-men and the first time since August 10, 2013 when Dimitry Imbongo and Andy Dorman were each sent off in a 3-0 road loss to Sporting Kansas City.
  • New England is now 0-3-2 in games in which they were reduced to nine men.
