Revolution beat Red Bulls 2-1 in Eastern Conference Championship rematch

Charlie Davies goal celebration

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution battled to a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, pushing their unbeaten streak to seven games. In a rematch of the 2014 Eastern Conference Championship, Charlie Davies and Teal Bunbury scored on either side of halftime to lead the Revs to their third straight win while extending their home unbeaten streak to a club record 13 games.

The Revs went ahead 1-0 in the ninth minute, when Andy Dorman played the ball out wide to London Woodberry and the Revolution right back whipped a cross into the center of the box for forward Charlie Davies, who cut across New York defender Matt Miazga and placed a diving header off the crossbar and into the net, past New York goalkeeper Luis Robles. Davies has now scored in each of the Revs’ last three games while Woodberry was credited with the first assist of his MLS career on the goal.

The Red Bulls created a pair of opportunities in the final seven minutes of the first half but could not find an equalizer. First, Mike Grella found himself free inside the Revolution area but could only blaze his volley over the bar, before Felipe found space just outside the area but fired a shot straight at Bobby Shuttleworth.

The Revolution doubled their lead in the 60th minute when neat buildup involving Davies, Juan Agudelo, Scott Caldwell and Lee Nguyen ended with Caldwell playing Nguyen into the area. Nguyen, who had entered the game just four minutes earlier, poked the ball to Bunbury on the right and the winger lashed his finish past Robles to make the score 2-0 in favor of New England.

Davies almost stretched the Revolution lead to three in the 70th minute, only to see his shot go just wide after creating a breakaway for himself from inside his own half.

New York pulled a goal back just three minutes later, when Mike Grella headed the ball over Jermaine Jones in the New England defense for Sacha Kljestan, who rounded Shuttleworth and scored into an empty net, making the score 2-1.

However, that would be as close as they would get as the Revs held on for their third straight win, ending a six-game regular-season winless streak against the Red Bulls.

Revolution Santander Man of the Match

TEAL BUNBURY – Scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute to lead the Revs to their third straight win. Bunbury, who now has two goals on the season, was a constant threat down the wings and tied a team-high with two shots.

Additional Game Notes

  • With the win, the Revolution are now 5-2-2 for 17 points on the season. They remain tied with D.C. United for first place in the Eastern Conference. United beat Columbus Crew SC 2-0 earlier this evening at RFK Stadium.
  • New England is now unbeaten in their last seven games, going 5-0-2 in that time after dropping their first two games of the season. The seven-game unbeaten streak is tied for the longest unbeaten streak for any club in MLS this season, matching the Red Bulls’ seven-game unbeaten streak, which was snapped tonight.
  • The win allowed the Revs to extend their home unbeaten streak to 13 games, setting a new club record. Since a 3-0 win over Colorado at Gillette Stadium on July 30, 2014, the Revs are 10-0-3 in regular-season home games. Including the MLS Cup Playoffs, New England is now unbeaten in their last 15 games at Gillette Stadium.
  • The Revs snapped a six-game regular-season winless streak against the Red Bulls with tonight’s win. The Revs had been 0-3-3 in their last six regular-season games against New York dating back to July 8, 2012.
  • New England has now won three straight games. That is tied for the second longest winning streak in MLS this season.
  • New England is now a perfect 3-0-0 when wearing their new secondary kits. This was the first time that they had worn the uniforms, which are inspired by the flag of New England, at Gillette Stadium.
  • Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made one change to the team that beat Real Salt Lake 4-0 last weekend at Gillette Stadium with Kelyn Rowe returning to the starting lineup in place of Lee Nguyen, who began the game on the bench.
  • This was the first time this season that Nguyen had started a game off the bench. He had started each of the last seven games of the season after missing the season opener in Seattle because of a groin injury.
  • Nguyen entered the game in the 56th minute, making just his fifth-ever appearance off the bench and his first since July 20, 2013.
  • The Revolution took the lead in the ninth minute when Charlie Davies headed home a London Woodberry cross.
  • That goal was the Revs’ quickest goal of the season and their quickest since a 2nd minute goal by Lee Nguyen on August 30, 2014 in Toronto.
  • Davies has now scored in each of the last three games. The only other time Davies scored in three consecutive MLS games was from March 19-April 16 of the 2011 season when he scored in the first four games of his MLS career while playing for D.C. United.
  • The goal was Davies’ team-leading third of the season, equaling his total from the 2014 regular season.
  • Including the postseason, Davies now has 10 goals as a member of the Revolution with four of those coming against the Red Bulls.
  • London Woodberry was credited with the assist on Davies’ goal. That was his first assist of the season and the first of his MLS career.
  • Woodberry is the 10th different Revolution player to record an assist this season. No team in MLS has had as many different players record an assist this season.
  • The Revolution doubled their lead in the 60th minute when Teal Bunbury scored his second goal of the season.
  • Lee Nguyen and Scott Caldwell were each credited with assists on the goal, tying them with Kelyn Rowe for the team lead with two.
  • Nguyen now has 16 assists in his Revolution career to go along with 28 goals. He is four assists shy of becoming the sixth player in club history to register 20 goals and 20 assists for the club.
  • Caldwell has now recorded two assists in each of his three seasons with the Revs, though this is the first time that he has had an assist in consecutive games.
  • New York pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute through Sacha Kljestan, making the score 2-1.
  • That was the first goal allowed by the Revs from open play since the 84th minute of a March 15 loss to NYC FC at Yankee Stadium. The Revs had gone 619 minutes without allowing a goal from open play in that time, conceding once on a penalty and once on a free kick.
  • London Woodberry played the full 90 minutes at right back for the third straight game. He now has as many starts this season as he did in all of 2013, which was his last season in MLS before joining the Revs ahead of the start of this year.
  • Kelyn Rowe made his 99th regular-season appearance in the game, leaving him one shy of becoming the 22nd player in club history to appear in 100 games.
  • Andy Dorman was shown a yellow card in the 36th minute. That was his team-leading fourth yellow card of the season, leaving him one shy of a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation.
  • That was the first of seven yellow cards that were given out in the game with four Revs and three Red Bulls being booked.
  • Juan Agudelo’s 76th minute yellow card was the 1,000th caution in Revolution history. The Revs are the fifth team in MLS history with 1,000 or more yellow cards in their history.
