COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The New England Revolution earned their second consecutive win of the season and their first-ever victory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, beating the Colorado Rapids 2-0 on Saturday evening. Juan Agudelo and Lee Nguyen scored on either side of halftime and Bobby Shuttleworth made five saves to help the Revs extend their unbeaten streak to three games and move into a tie for second place in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference.

The Revs entered Saturday’s game with an 0-3-3 record all-time at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park but they were able to get on the scoreboard first in the 18th minute when Juan Agudelo scored his first of the season with a deft finish following a Kelyn Rowe perfectly weighted diagonal ball from Kelyn Rowe. Rowe tackled the ball off Colorado’s Sam Cronin near midfield and hit a long, cross field pass for the streaking Agudelo, who had gotten in between a pair of defenders. Agudelo expertly took the ball down with his left foot and then flicked a shot over the on rushing Rapids’ goalkeeper that bounced off the underside of the crossbar and into the net for a 1-0 Revolution lead.

That was the first goal allowed all season by the Rapids and while they had not scored one all season either, the nearly did just before halftime. First, Dillon Powers was played into the box alone, but Bobby Shuttleworth was able to get a hand to the shot and parry it wide of the post to keep the home side off the scoreboard. Minutes later, in first half stoppage time, Gabriel Torres headed narrowly over from six yards out, sending the Revs into the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage.

New England doubled its lead in the 54th minute when Lee Nguyen converted a penalty kick after Charlie Davies had been pulled down in the box by the Rapids’ Jared Watts. Davies was able to turn Marc Burch on the left flank and race into the penalty are before Watts, who was racing over to provide support, pulled him down. This was the Revs’ first penalty kick in all competitions since July 16, 2014 and Nguyen sent Irwin the wrong way for his first goal of the season, and giving the Revs a 2-0 victory.

Revolution Santander Man of the Match

BOBBY SHUTTLEWORTH – Kept his second clean sheet of the season and helped to keep the Rapids off the scoreboard for a fourth straight game. The Revolution goalkeeper finished the game with five saves, including a sprawling stop late in the first half on Dillon Powers that allowed the Revs to take a 1-0 lead into halftime and eventually claim the full three points.

Additional Game Notes

  • With the win, the Revolution are now 2-2-1 for seven points on the season. The result moves the Revs into a tie for second place with the New York Red Bulls.
  • This was the Revs’ second straight win and they are now unbeaten in their last three games dating back to a 0-0 home draw with Montreal on March 21.
  • This was New England’s first-ever win at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. They had been 0-3-3 at the Commerce City, Colorado venue since it opened in 2007.
  • Today was the 600th regular-season game in Revolution history. They are now 227-257-116 in their history.
Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made one change to the team that beat San Jose 2-1 last weekend at Gillette Stadium. Andy Dorman returned to the starting lineup in place of Daigo Kobayashi, who missed the game with a left hamstring strain that he picked up in training earlier this week.
  • In addition to Kobayashi, the Revs were once again without Jermaine Jones, who missed his fifth straight game while recovering from offseason sports hernia surgery.
  • While Jones and Kobayashi missed out, Kevin Alston and Teal Bunbury each returned to the 18-man squad. Bunbury had missed the last three games after suffering a right shoulder sprain late in the season opening loss to Seattle while Alston had missed the last two after exiting the loss to NYC FC on March 15 with a right hamstring strain.
  • Both Alston and Bunbury entered the game as second half substitutes.
  • Juan Agudelo gave the Revs a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute with his first goal of the season and first for the club since October 27, 2013 when he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Columbus in that year’s season finale.
  • Agudelo’s goal was also the first of his career in six games against the Rapids.
  • That was the first goal scored by the Revs on the road this season and the first allowed by the Rapids on the year.
  • Kelyn Rowe was credited with the only assist on the goal, which was his first of the season. That was the 19th assist of Rowe’s career, leaving him tied with Imad Baba for 10th in club history.
  • Lee Nguyen doubled the Revs lead in the 54th minute when he converted a penalty kick for his first goal of the season.
  • He now has eight successful penalties since joining the Revs, good for the third most in club history. Only Shalrie Joseph has more with 12 and Steve Ralston (9) have more.
  • Charlie Davies earned the Revs’ penalty when he was pulled down in the box by Jared Watts. This was the first penalty given to the Revs since July 16, 2014 against the LA Galaxy. It ended a run of 20 straight regular-season games without a penalty for New England.
  • Revolution captain Jose Goncalves left the game in the 67th minute because of a left calf injury. He was replaced by Kevin Alston and Chris Tierney took over the captain’s armband.
  • Boby Shuttleworth finished the game with five saves to record his second shutout of the season. Shuttleworth and the Revolution defense has not conceded a goal from open play since the 84th minute of the 2-0 loss to New York City FC on March 15.
  • Lee Nguyen made the 99th appearance of his Revolution career in the game, playing the full 90 minutes in the center of midfield. He is in line to become the 21st player in Revolution history to play 100 games for the club next weekend against Columbus.
