TEAM NOTES

On the road again
After opening their 2014 home slate against Vancouver Whitecaps FC last Saturday at Gillette Stadium, the Revs head back out on the road for back-to-back road games at San Jose and D.C. … after the game in D.C., the Revs will have played four of their first five games of 2014 away from home … the Revs are winless on the road in 2014 but posted a 6-6-5 road record in 2013, good for second-best in MLS.

No luck at the “Buck”
Buck Shaw Stadium hasn’t been the kindest of away venues to the Revs in recent years … in the team’s five matches at Buck Shaw Stadium, the Revs are 1-4-0 … the Revs’ only victory at Buck Shaw Stadium came on March 21, 2009 – a 1-0 win … since that match, the Revs are 0-3-0 in their last three games in Santa Clara.

First shutout for defensive unit
Bobby Shuttleworth and the Revs’ defense posted their first shutout of the season in the home opener at Gillette Stadium last Saturday with a 0-0 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC … Shuttleworth made two saves to earn his first clean on the season and the 14th of his career … last year, the Revs posted a club-record 14 shutouts, which was the second-best mark in MLS.

Steady progression from back four
After surrendering four goals in the season opener against the Houston Dynamo on March 8, the Revs have rebounded with back-to-back defensive efforts … the Revs have allowed just one goal combined in their last two games … the team surrendered one goal at Philadelphia in a 1-0 loss at PPL Park on March 15, and earned their first shutout against Vancouver Whitecaps FC in a 0-0 draw at Gillette Stadium last Saturday.

Offense knocking on the door
The Revs are still searching for their first goal in 2014, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been chances … the Revs took 17 shots – their second-highest total this season – against Vancouver last Saturday, a figure that’s one shy of the team’s high (18 at Houston on March 8) … despite still remaining goalless, the Revs are tied for fourth in MLS in shots (41), four shots shy of second place Kansas City (45), and two shy of third-place Portland (43).

Creating opportunities through corners
In addition to the team’s 41 total shots, the Revolution is also ranked third in MLS in corner kicks with 23, three behind league leader Kansas City (27) … Chris Tierney has taken a team-high 10 corners, while Kelyn Rowe (6), Daigo Kobayashi (4), Diego Fagundez (2) and Lee Nguyen (1) have also stepped to the flag.

Three games, three different lineups
Through the first three games of the 2014 season, injuries have forced the Revs to put out three different lineups … only five players have started all three games this season: Teal Bunbury, Diego Fagundez, Bobby Shuttleworth, A.J. Soares and Chris Tierney … the team has started nine different midfielders and six different defenders through three matches.

Another start, another 90 for Goncalves
Jose Goncalves returned to the starting lineup for the team’s home opener against Vancouver Whitecaps FC last Saturday at Gillette Stadium … in true ironman fashion, Goncalves played another full 90 at the center back position … Goncalves has now made 36 career appearances with the Revs – all starts – and has played every minute of every game in which he’s appeared.

Imbongo makes season debut
Dimitry Imbongo saw his first game action of 2014 last Saturday against Vancouver … Imbongo came on in the 81st minute, making his first appearance since the team’s 3-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City in second leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals … Imbongo made a career-best 21 appearances (including 11 starts) in 2013, while scoring three goals and adding four assists.

Farrell’s versatility shining through
Andrew Farrell has made two starts in 2014, both at different defensive positions … his first start of the season  came at center back on March 15 at Philadelphia … last weekend, Farrell returned to his more familiar right back spot against Vancouver … in a late-match stretch, however, Farrell showcased his speed and footwork with a 40-yard run with the ball at his feet, shaking off two Vancouver players – including speedster Darren Mattocks, and finding Kelyn Rowe coming up through the midfield.

Revs add Pickens through Waiver Draft
The Revolution claimed goalkeeper Matt Pickens through the Waiver Draft last Friday, and has been added to the team’s roster … Pickens spent the last five years in Colorado, where he started all 116 matches he appeared in since 2009 … for his career, which also has a stop in Chicago, Pickens has 156 appearances, including 154 starts … Pickens has a career goals against average of 1.25 and has posted 40 shutouts, while leading his teams to a 57-56-42 combined record.

Sanchez loaned to Rochester
The Revolution loaned defender Jossimar Sanchez to the Rochester Rhinos, the club’s USL PRO affiliate, last Friday … Sanchez is the third of four players the Revolution will loan to Rochester for the 2014 season per the team’s affiliate agreement … the Revolution can re-call any of its loaned players, which includes goalkeeper Luis Soffner and midfielder Alec Sundly, at any time.

Portugal and Mexico set to meet at Gillette
Before the Mexican and Portuguese national teams make their way to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, they’ll face off in an international friendly at Gillette Stadium … on June 6, Cristiano Ronaldo will lead Portugal against Javier Hernandez and Mexico in a final tune up before the World Cup … kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m., and tickets are on sale and start at $40.
