TEAM NOTES

Revs season comes to an end
Despite taking a 2-1 lead on aggregate into last Wednesday’s second leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals at Sporting Park, Sporting Kansas City earned a 3-1 win to claim the series, 4-3 on aggregate … Dimitry Imbongo’s 70th minute goal that put the Revs up 3-2 on aggregate was not enough to hold off SKC as Seth Sinovic buried a left-footed shot in the 79th minute to pull his team level on aggregate before Claudio Bieler netted the winner in the 113th minute of extra time … the goal bounced the Revs from the MLS Cup Playoffs and ended the 2013 campaign.

What a difference a year makes
Despite a tough MLS Cup Playoffs exit at the hands of Sporting KC, the Revs enjoyed a successful 2013 season … the Revs were the second most improved team in MLS with a +16 point increase (behind Portland’s +23 point increase) and saw significant improvement on offense and defense … the Revs finished seventh in MLS in scoring (14th in 2012) and tied for third in goals against average (tied for ninth in 2012, 1.12).

Reis injury update
Matt Reis underwent surgery on Monday to repair a torn quadriceps tendon he suffered in the Revs’ last match of the season on Nov. 6, at Sporting Kansas City … he is expected to need five to seven months to rehabilitate the injury … Reis appeared in 12 regular-season matches this season and went 7-0-4 on the year, becoming the first goalkeeper in MLS history to go undefeated after making 10 or more appearances in a season … Reis also posted his career-best goals against average (0.72) and had five shutouts.

Bengtson called up for Honduras’ November friendlies
Jerry Bengtson has once again been called up to represent Honduras during the country’s upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Ecuador … Honduras, which is currently ranked 34th in the world in the most recent FIFA rankings, will meet 11th ranked Brazil on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, before heading to Houston to play 22nd ranked Ecuador on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at BBVA Compass Stadium … Bengtson has 39 appearances for Honduras and has scored 18 international goals … Bengtson’s last international appearance came on Oct. 15, 2013, in a 2-2 draw against Jamaica, while his last international goal was the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Costa Rica on Oct. 11, 2013.

Fagundez dubbed most improved
Soccer By Ives named Revs’ Homegrown standout Diego Fagundez as the site’s Most Improved Player for 2013 … the 18-year-old enjoyed a breakout season in 2013, scoring a team-high 13 goals while adding seven assists … the Most Improved Player award highlights the players who enjoyed breakout campaigns in 2013 … through his first two seasons with the Revs, Fagundez scored just four total goals and added three assists … in 2013, Fagundez finished tied for fifth in MLS in scoring and tied for second in game-winning goals … more impressively, all of Fagundez’s 13 goals came from the run of play where Camillo Sanvezzo (22 goals), Mike Magee (21 goals) and Robbie Keane (16 goals) all benefitted from being their team’s primary penalty kick takers.

Goncalves pulls (first?) defender of the year award
Soccer by Ives also named first-year defender Jose Goncalves its Defender of the Year for 2013 … the Portuguese center back joined the Revs this year on loan from Swiss club, Sion FC … Goncalves was one of only three field players in MLS to start all 34 games and play every minute of every match … both of his goals were game-winners, and he garnered team captain honors in May … Goncalves helped anchor the Revs’ defense that was among the league’s top units all season, while supporting a backline that included nine different players throughout the year.

Another Goal of the Year candidate
For the second straight season, the Revs have a serious candidate for the AT&T Goal of the Year … Juan Agudelo is into the second round of voting for his cheeky back-heel flick against the Chicago Fire in Week 25 … voting is open until 11:59 p.m. PT, on Tuesday Nov. 12 … in 2012, Lee Nguyen made it all the way to the final four with his shot from distance against his former club the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, but lost in the last round of voting.

Movember is the month of a Mustache
The Revs will literally show their support for Movember when they grow mustaches as part of the charity’s annual November men’s cancer awareness campaign … Revs players who have committed to growing Mos (mustaches) to support Movember’s mission are Kevin Alston, Diego Fagundez and Chris Tierney as part of Gillette’s #TeamGillette, and Scott Caldwell, Andrew Farrell, Ryan Guy, Stephen McCarthy and Kelyn Rowe as part of the Revolution’s team … friends, family and fans are encouraged to show their support for men’s cancer awareness by donating to the Revolution’s Movember team, or to individual MOs’ (mustache growers’) campaigns.
