Youth Update: National Finals Week

Youth: National Finals

FRISCO, Texas – The New England Revolution Under-18 team suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss in its opening game of the 2012-13 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week, giving up a pair of late goals to Shattucks-Saint Mary’s.

Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.) put New England on the scoreboard in the 14th minute, rounding the wall with his free kick and slotting it between the far post and the goalkeeper. As halftime approached, it looked as though the Revs would go into the break with the lead, but Shattucks responded in the 43rd minute with a goal from Ricardo Lopez-Espin to level the score.

On the other side of the break, the Revs scored the go-ahead once more. Sady’s throw-in from the left found Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.), who then laid the ball off for Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.). The midfielder beat a pair of defenders to send a low ball across the face of goal, where Gabe Gissie (Worcester, Mass.) pounced and sent it into the roof of the netting to make it 2-1.

Shattucks pressed for the equalizer throughout the remainder of the half, hitting the woodwork in both the 65th and 74th minutes. Lucas Stauffer found the back of the net in the 87th minute, however, equalizing at 2-2. And as regulation time came to a close, Lopez-Espin scored once more to give Shattucks a full three points in its first game of Finals Week.

With the loss, New England sits in third place in Group 2 with 0 pts. and a -1 goal differential. De Anza Force topped St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri, 3-1 in its opening match to lead the group with 3 pts. and a +2 goal differential. Shattucks is in second at 3 pts., +1, and Scott Gallagher falls to fourth place with 0 pts., -2.

With a rest day tomorrow, the Under-18s will play their second game of Finals Week against De Anza Force (Calif.) on Tuesday, July 16, at 7 p.m. ET.
