Final: Revs 1, Chivas USA 1

CARSON, Calif. – Chad Barrett made the most of a brief substitute appearance on Saturday night at StubHub Center, scoring the game-tying goal in the 88th minute to help the New England Revolution earn a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA.

Barrett entered the game in the 83rd minute and needed just five minutes to make his mark, bundling home a cross from Diego Fagundez to cancel out a first-half goal from Laurent Courtois.

The equalizer was a just reward for the Revs (5-5-6, 21 pts.), who controlled almost 70 percent of the possession in the second half and generated six shots on target in the second 45 minutes. Chivas USA (3-10-3, 12 pts.) snapped a seven-game losing streak with the draw, but saw its winless run reach 11 games (0-9-2).

Former Chivas USA forward Juan Agudelo was unavailable to face his old club after suffering a sprained knee in the midweek Open Cup loss to D.C. United, while right back Andrew Farrell was suspended following his red card in the Revolution’s last league match in Vancouver.

From the opening whistle Chivas USA showed it wasn’t afraid to unleash shots from distance and it paid off with the opening goal in the 18th minute. Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth first parried away a long-distance effort, but the ball eventually found its way to Courtois and the Frenchman drilled a 20-yard shot under the crossbar.

New England almost equalized just two minutes later when Lee Nguyen sailed a 35-yard free kick which skimmed the top of the crossbar, but that proved to be the closest the Revolution came to scoring in a sloppy first half.

The Revs began the second half with a bit more energy and controlled the tempo as Chivas USA often sat back in a defensive shell. Chris Tierney forced a strong save from Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy just three minutes after the break, while Jerry Bengtson was denied by Kennedy from a tight angle in the 59th minute.

Fagundez, Stephen McCarthy and Saer Sene were also denied by Kennedy before Barrett finally made the breakthrough in the 88th minute. It was Fagundez who delivered the killer cross and Barrett got just enough on his shot to see it trickle over the line and help the Revs claim their third result from four West Coast trips in 2013.

The Revs return home for their next two matches, beginning next weekend when they’ll host the San Jose Earthquakes at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.
