FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – It’s not about where you’ve been, but where you’re going.

In short, eyes forward. That’s the approach New England Revolution head coach Jay Heaps is taking with his club after building a bit of momentum with back-to-back league wins and a successful start to the U.S. Open Cup.

While the Revs are a confident bunch after racking up three straight victories in all competitions, Heaps doesn’t want his side to get caught up in modest accomplishments. Instead, he wants the club’s focus trained entirely on the two-time defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy, which visits Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s good to get [the Open Cup underway], but now we have to move on,” Heaps said. “One thing we’ve been doing is focusing on the task at hand. First was [the Open Cup game in Rochester], and now we’re on to the next one and that’s why we had a session here [on Wednesday], to get us focused on playing LA.”

Momentum can be a powerful force, but there’s danger in relying too much on recent form to carry a club forward. Complacency is always a risk when victories start to string together, which is precisely why Heaps has urged his side to focus on Sunday’s meeting with the Galaxy and nothing more.

It’s not to say the Revs aren’t aware of their current position in the standings – tied for sixth in the East – and the opportunity they have to continue climbing with a string of positive results. But when making preparations on the training field and in the locker room, there is no past and no distant future. There is only the next opponent.

“We’re really zoning in on a singular focus, which is LA at home,” said Heaps. “For us, I think everyone knows where we are within the group, where we are at 4-4-4, where we are in the standings and what we need to do. But in terms of preparation, it is solely focused on LA.”
